Sébastien Lecornu says new measures will be put in place from tonight Macron criticises ‘unbridled violence’ after 2,400 arrests across France French PM Lecornu says he has asked prefects to implement “a number of partial curfews” in certain “localised” urban areas to stop further disorder, which he attributes to “the extreme-left” and some criminal elements. The US has ordered all artificial intelligence (AI) technology from the Chinese firm DeepSeek to be removed from most government systems. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has banned all use of DeepSeek within civilian government agencies, and any technology built with the aid of its AI models. As a powerful AI model that is open source - meaning it is free to access and less expensive to use - DeepSeek has been seen as a disruptive force in the ongoing AI technology race. While the DHS notice did not detail the exact security concerns surrounding DeepSeek, the White House has this year criticised AI firms from China. The DHS, DeepSeek, and the Chinese embassy in Washington DC have

The 2020 thread does a lot: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23197966 It shows 100 solutions in light of Parkinson’s Law of Triviality. Intense opinions and discussion. It teaches about alligator energy and how they can live without food for up to two years. It teaches that this site should look like top, yet I’ve rarely seen top on a white terminal in the past two decades. This does exist, nofi. Workarounds exist, and those are “mid” janky shit shows. One I tried was an iOS app. It flashes the page between light and dark on every click. Aside from not being a solution, it’s nausea-inducing, takes 20+ steps to install, requires you to blindly trust the app without a Git repo, and

Police have been guarding the hospital in Melbourne where independent MP Helen Haines is being treated As increasingly frequent acts of violence against politicians have shocked the globe in recent years, Australia has watched on with a contradictory feeling: that attacks like that could not happen here, and that it was only a matter of time until they did. Australians will tell you this is a largely peaceful society with a comparatively civil public discourse. Violence targeting politicians has been rare, the bungled assassination of Labor leader Arthur Calwell in 1966 now a distant and fleeting memory. But MPs and public figures – backed by experts – have been warning of a volcano of

Data centers are demanding more energy, and the Trump administration is making sure fossil fuels meet the moment. The US is building more fossil fuel infrastructure than it has in a decade while renewable energy growth slows down, a new report shows. Electricity demand is also climbing faster than it has in more than a decade with more data centers, factories, and electric vehicles plugging into the grid. Despite those growing demands, the Trump administration has sought to hobble the wind and solar industries in favor of fossil fuels. America’s energy landscape is already shifting as a result, according to the report published last week by the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund and

Many of Tuesday's front pages depict the unrest sweeping through France, where violence sparked by student protests continues to cause major disruptions. "The French correction" is the Metro's headline, embedding a picture showing a row of Paris riot cops next to the caption "Formez vos batallions". A fire that killed four members of the Canadian military and injured dozens of others on Saturday spread with alarming speed, accounts suggest. It broke out in a grassy training area at a base in the province of Alberta and spread rapidly due to strong winds. "The fire was 1km (0.6 miles) away when the wind shifted," said Maj-Gen Wade Rutland, commander of the 1st Canadian Division of the Canadian Armed Forces. "It is not normal for a fire to move a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds." Prime Minister Mark Carney described it as "one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime". Officials have ruled out the possibility of "any terrorist activity". Speaking in the House of

This has been a collective effort, after some of the prodding at the %gs/gsbase question (see thread [1] ). The gates swung open with Andrii's software solution to the %gs issue - explanation to me: "can't set gsbase, so we are emulating %gs prefix on commands". Overall, the heavy lifting was done by Andrii
