We often get asked "How can I eliminate panics in my Rust code?" There have been several attempts to tackle this issue. Under the Open Device Partnership and working together with Microsoft, we have developed and released the Call Graph Analyzer (CGA) , a tool to extract the callgraph from monomorphized MIR . This callgraph can be used to track down what functions in the compiled binary can panic. In this blogpost we discuss why this new approach is both better and worse than pre-existing approaches at finding panics. Before discussing the Call Graph Analyzer, we should first consider why panics are useful, and in what cases it might be beneficial to minimize or perhaps even completely

Tom Phillips, a longtime chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court and a staunch Republican, endorsed Democrat James Talarico in the Texas Senate race on Monday. In an op-ed published in the Austin American-Statesman , Phillips, a Republican who served as the state’s chief justice from 1988 to 2004, said that he believed that Talarico would be a better representative of Texas in the Senate, and more willing to engage in productive bipartisanship. By contrast, he said, Paxton would be a Trump acolyte who would enable the president’s excesses and self-dealing, steering the Republican Party away from the ideals Phillips believes it should embody, such as limited government and free enterprise.

Now, with all that telemetry in place and a coding agent I can finally engage with production properly: not reactively when something goes wrong, but every day I can chat with the production, ask it about its concerns, about what is going on lately, if something feels wrong. A lot of people are leaving software engineering because agent-based workflows killed their joy. I don’t have that problem; I never liked the job in the first place.

FBI officers raided a California home in connection with the investigation into former US Congressman Eric Swalwell, US media reports. Swalwell, 45, dropped out of California's governor's race earlier this year and gave up his seat in the House of Representatives after allegations of sexual misconduct while in office emerged. In August, the FBI stopped the former Democratic lawmaker at an airport, seized his electronic devices and raided his Washington DC home as part of the investigation into those allegations. Swalwell has in the past denied any wrongdoing and his attorney has called them "fabricated". "These accusations are false, fabricated, and deeply offensive - a calculated and

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has become a key figure in the current AI era. Artificial intelligence (AI) firm Anthropic just released the required paperwork ahead of its long-anticipated debut on the US stock market. The 335-page document included fresh details of how the Claude chatbot owner makes money, what it spends that money on and who it is controlled by. Anthropic also detailed some of the risks it claimed AI technology poses, including how it could take human lives. That information sat alongside the many purported benefits of the technology. Every public company has to tell potential investors how things could go wrong.

Lula’s fourth term may have spared BRICS an internal fracture at a time when Trump is trying to pressure countries back into Washington’s orbit. When Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva scored his surprise election victory on Sunday, winning an unprecedented fourth term in office, his supporters were euphoric. The joy they felt over Lula’s victory has echoed across large parts of the Global South – and could restore some hope to the grouping that has sought to give emerging countries a greater stake on the world stage, the BRICS alliance. At a time when United States President Donald Trump is seeking to reassert US power and has cast BRICS as a threat to US interests, Lula’s

Is this slop or just bad journalism? Maybe they told it somewhere further down how it is actually implemented , but i stopped reading after 6 paragraphs and 4 repetitions. Slop assisted bad journalism. At some point it links to a paper that I did not read but I recognised one of the authors as a prominent origamist.

Cryo is a programming language that models long-running tasks like workflows or AI agents. Programs freeze to disk when idle and can be thawed when new data arrives. As part of our announcement of Endothermic Labs, we've put together a small demo of Cryo that highlights its features and walks through the language and its plugin system. We originally built it as a way to deploy healthcare agents at scale, but have rebuilt it from the ground up to be a standalone toolchain for long-running tasks. It acts as something like a cross between Durable Objects and Temporal workflows, where the script itself is the durable unit with no replay needed. Cryo is statically and structurally typed, with a

Anthropic’s planned IPO raises questions over whether it can maintain its safe and responsible AI priorities. Anthropic wants to have it both ways. With its impending IPO, it wants to tap the vast riches of the public markets and insists it doesn’t want to compromise its core mission of developing AI safely and for the benefit of humanity. But greater model capabilities bring greater risks, and shareholders eager for returns may have little patience for costly safety measures that slow products on their way to market. Sam Altman, the CEO of Anthropic’s archrival, OpenAI, has cited investor pressures as one reason the company is not pursuing an IPO this year. Anthropic hopes it can resist

Should states have sought more in their kids online safety settlement? When attorneys general from across the US announced a $17 billion settlement with Meta this summer, the sum was unprecedented. But a ruling last week by a New Mexico judge blew that number out of the water. The judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion to resolve claims that Meta misled users around the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal and related incidents. Similar claims were resolved by the settlement with most other states. The outcome raised an obvious question: Should these states have asked for more? The answer depends on a mix of factors, including whether the $25 billion order stands up to Meta’s legal challenges.
