Nature lover Ashley Schmidt no longer spends much time in her garden, in the Dallas suburb of North Garland. She's also given up on cycling to the local parks where she previously enjoyed taking close-up photos of the bugs, lizards and toads. It's all because she can't stand the sound of the delivery drones that fly overhead, depositing her neighbours' online orders. "They emit this very annoying buzz. It triggers my fight or flight response," says the 44-year-old administrative assistant. "You can hear the drones on approach and you can hear them inside your home when they pass directly overhead and then you hear them as they leave," she says.

FBI officers raided a California home in connection with the investigation into former US Congressman Eric Swalwell, US media reports. Swalwell, 45, dropped out of California's governor's race earlier this year and gave up his seat in the House of Representatives after allegations of sexual misconduct while in office emerged. In August, the FBI stopped the former Democratic lawmaker at an airport, seized his electronic devices and raided his Washington DC home as part of the investigation into those allegations. Swalwell has in the past denied any wrongdoing and his attorney has called them "fabricated". "These accusations are false, fabricated, and deeply offensive - a calculated and

Many investors stand to win big when Anthropic goes public. Stakes held by firms including Menlo Ventures, Sequoia, Sound Ventures, and Spark Capital are expected to return billions . Yet according to Anthropic’s S-1 , none of those VC firms owns 5%, the threshold for being included in the principal stockholders’ table. That’s highly unusual. In a typical tech IPO, lead venture investors hold double-digit-percentage stakes in the startups they backed. The reason is Anthropic’s size. While the venture firms may lack sizable percentage stakes, Anthropic sold large stakes to strategic partners, companies that are also its business partners. Indeed, Amazon is likely the single largest financial

Lula’s fourth term may have spared BRICS an internal fracture at a time when Trump is trying to pressure countries back into Washington’s orbit. When Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva scored his surprise election victory on Sunday, winning an unprecedented fourth term in office, his supporters were euphoric. The joy they felt over Lula’s victory has echoed across large parts of the Global South – and could restore some hope to the grouping that has sought to give emerging countries a greater stake on the world stage, the BRICS alliance. At a time when United States President Donald Trump is seeking to reassert US power and has cast BRICS as a threat to US interests, Lula’s

King Charles III has begun his tour of the Caribbean by acknowledging the "great suffering of the past" as he faced calls for slavery reparations. Speaking an event in the Bahamas celebrating local youth, the King said the country's culture was "born out of darkness", and it was "only right" to acknowledge historic injustices. His nine-day tour will culminate in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where the King has confirmed leaders will discuss the region's legacy of slavery. The visit, his first as monarch, comes in the wake of renewed calls from Caribbean nations for Britain to apologise for its role in selling enslaved people for profit. Prior to the trip, Buckingham

Tom Phillips, a longtime chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court and a staunch Republican, endorsed Democrat James Talarico in the Texas Senate race on Monday. In an op-ed published in the Austin American-Statesman , Phillips, a Republican who served as the state’s chief justice from 1988 to 2004, said that he believed that Talarico would be a better representative of Texas in the Senate, and more willing to engage in productive bipartisanship. By contrast, he said, Paxton would be a Trump acolyte who would enable the president’s excesses and self-dealing, steering the Republican Party away from the ideals Phillips believes it should embody, such as limited government and free enterprise.

cross-posted from: https://piefed.world/c/scientificarticles/p/1496063/young-adults-with-cancer-report-getting-dismissed-by-doctors Doctor: Regulations and the environment would have to be really bad for such a young person to get cancer. Let’s discount that diagnosis and take a wait and see approach. And the doctors too, no doubt. Imagine so many patients being a high cancer risk? Yeah those doctors were raised by dismissive boomer and silent generation parents and taught by the same generations at med school. They’re largely genx (my gen so I’m very familiar with them and our attitudes), genx has largely given up and was already the grunge type gen that didn’t believe anyone about

Expert ‘shepherds’ will decide how best to share the latest breakthroughs in computer science and physics. On Monday, OpenAI announced impressive breakthroughs in mathematics, computer science, and physics, along with what the company says is an evolving approach to communicating its findings. But despite its apparent course correction, researchers who spoke to The Verge are growing increasingly tired of the company’s antics. It has been a turbulent few months between OpenAI and mathematicians, who are still grappling with the hundreds of preprints unceremoniously dumped on them at the start of October. This time, OpenAI says it is working with expert “shepherds” to decide how best to share

A programmer can point at any line of code and see who wrote it, when, and what the file looked like on any past day. A lawyer reading a federal statute usually cannot, at least not without an afternoon in the notes at the foot of the section. But why shouldn't they have the same, convenient system of record? Outside the titles Congress has enacted as positive law, the code is only prima facie evidence of the law, and the Statutes at Large govern where the two differ. [ 1 ] The Office of the Law Revision Counsel publishes it as a series of release points, each current through a named public law, and keeps reorganising it; a bill to enact title 41 as positive law was introduced in September

Prediction markets, like Polymarket and its main rival, Kalshi, have flourished in Trump's second term. Gabby Jones/AFP via Getty Images hide caption Polymarket has investigated "dozens" of bets on its prediction markets related to the midterm election, according to the company's head of global intelligence and investigations, Shana Bautista. At least two of these Polymarket investigations have been referred to its regulator, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, according to a person who is familiar with the probes, but not authorized to speak publicly about them. These investigations into election insider trading and manipulation come as prediction market Polymarket — and its

The ABC has doubled down on its call in Senate estimates for depictions of Bluey to be removed from a One Nation cartoon in which the beloved character repeatedly runs over politicians with an SUV. Inside Apple’s first folding iPhone, contact with the delicate inner screen could cause a stress ‘hotspot.’ Within hours of the iPhone Duo launch last Friday, people reported that the inner screen on some brand new foldable phones was already broken. The issue was similar across many photos shared on social media: some kind of issue or crack would appear in the middle of the screen above the hinge, with lines appearing on the right side of the display. On Monday, Apple acknowledged an “issue” and said it’s replacing damaged units, without going into much detail about how many broken phones have been reported so far. Shahram Mokhtari, the lead teardown technician at iFixit, has actually

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has become a key figure in the current AI era. Artificial intelligence (AI) firm Anthropic just released the required paperwork ahead of its long-anticipated debut on the US stock market. The 335-page document included fresh details of how the Claude chatbot owner makes money, what it spends that money on and who it is controlled by. Anthropic also detailed some of the risks it claimed AI technology poses, including how it could take human lives. That information sat alongside the many purported benefits of the technology. Every public company has to tell potential investors how things could go wrong.

Should states have sought more in their kids online safety settlement? When attorneys general from across the US announced a $17 billion settlement with Meta this summer, the sum was unprecedented. But a ruling last week by a New Mexico judge blew that number out of the water. The judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion to resolve claims that Meta misled users around the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal and related incidents. Similar claims were resolved by the settlement with most other states. The outcome raised an obvious question: Should these states have asked for more? The answer depends on a mix of factors, including whether the $25 billion order stands up to Meta’s legal challenges.
