Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a fourth term in office in a dramatic comeback over his right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro. Left-wing leader Lula took 51.79% of votes, becoming the first president since the return to civilian rule in 1985 to win an election after losing the first round of voting. Lula told celebratory crowds this election is a "loss for negativity, lies", later adding "long live democracy". Flávio Bolsonaro, who is the son of convicted former president Jair Bolsonaro, has so far refused to recognise the result and called for it to be annulled, which experts say is unlikely. In an unprecedented move, polls were also extended for two hours on Sunday

They’re based on six-year-old technology, but the XM4C still deliver respectable performance, and I love using them. If you buy something from a link, The Verge may earn a commission. See our ethics statement. When Sony announced the WH-1000XM4C headphones, I was perplexed. A product revamp usually includes at least one or two significant improvements. Or if it’s a nostalgia play, it’s from a decades-old product and not one that came out in 2020. Beyond a few minor tweaks, though, the XM4C are remarkably similar to their six-year-old namesake, the beloved WH-1000XM4 . They even use the same processor for active noise cancellation (ANC). And while I went into this review questioning the

FILE - A piece of toast is prepared with Vegemite in Sydney, Australia, Monday, Nov. 17, 2025. Rick Rycroft/AP hide caption MELBOURNE, Australia — A prisoner on Monday lost his challenge to an Australian state's ban on inmates eating Vegemite after he argued in court that withholding the polarizing yeast-based spread breached his human right to "enjoy his culture as an Australian." Andre McKechnie, 55, who is serving a life sentence for murder, took his battle for the salty, sticky, black-brown byproduct of brewing beer to the Supreme Court of the state of Victoria last year. He had argued being refused Vegemite denied him his right under the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act

In my post about Scraper Junkyard results , I hypothesized a single, centrally-controlled web crawler that made requests from Contabo GmbH IP address ranges. After a closer look at the Apache combined format log files, I can confirm that at least one web crawler works out of Contabo IP address space. Contabo is a cloud provider, renting virtual private servers, and dedicated servers. This isn’t someone taking advantage of residential proxies. Above, a visualization of web traffic to my Scraper Junkyard, a large number of interlinked pragmatically generated URLs for the period 2026-08-01, when I made the scraper junkyard available, through 2026-09-30, when I lost patience with the

Hi HN. A while ago I started building a generic people matching app based on LLM-as-a-judge. I needed a way to bypass the O(n^2) "everyone rates everyone else" trap, but generic RAG was much worse than expected. DNA is a search-like API at the core of that product. It stores one embedding per item (like a vector DB) and gives the best match(es). You evaluate them in some way (LLM / Decision Model / users), and send the score back. This makes it improve in real time, so next time it gives you better results. In my tests, it needed 7x fewer LLM judgments than scoring down the embedding list. Paper in progress. What I don’t know yet is what demo would make you want to try building with it.

Microsoft’s buyout offer is reaching more of its 223,000 or so employees. Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to up to 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India. In a message to employees , Microsoft chief people officer Amy Coleman writes that this gives staff members “the opportunity to leave Microsoft with financial support and career planning resources” as the company looks to trim staff without another round of layoffs. Sources familiar with the situation tell The Verge that staffers across Microsoft are eligible for the voluntary exit offers, including those in its AI experiences, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows + Devices, Xbox, finance, and human resources teams. Microsoft’s

Anthropic is taking a big step toward a blockbuster stock listing that would rank among the biggest IPOs ever. Patrick Sison/AP Photo hide caption The artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, maker of the hugely popular Claude AI models, has taken a major step toward holding an initial public offering that analysts expect to be one of the biggest ever. Anthropic filed final paperwork with regulators on Monday for an IPO under the ticker symbol ANT that reports have said could value the company at between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion . That would put it in league with Elon Musk's rocketry and AI company SpaceX, which was valued at around $1.8 trillion when it listed in June . Anthropic's

Ai agents in accounting firms are way less effective than Ai agents in law firms for example. writing contracts is where an LLM shines, it's basic building blocks are formal words. Formal is the key term here. The rules that govern it are much less open to intrepretation. In accounting, the rules are more grounded. Not in precedent but in a generally accepted specific rulebook. Gross profits mean the same in the US as it does in Bangladesh, and it will mean the same 100 years in the future. In accounting, probability is very bad. A single bad journal entry in a 100,000 ledger can distort the entire balance sheet.

Anthropic has warned artificial intelligence (AI) could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity" as it unveiled details of its planned blockbuster stock market listing in the US. The firm's valuation is expected to exceed that of SpaceX, which was the biggest-ever listing at an initial valuation of about $1.8 trillion in the summer. Anthropic has not yet disclosed the number of shares to be released, their price range, or a date for the listing. The Claude chatbot developer reported $16.3bn (£12.2bn) of revenue in the first half of the year, with losses of more than $80.7bn. Anthropic, which said it will list on the Nasdaq under the symbol ANT, will be the first fully AI-focused

submitted by gedaliyah to world 2 points | 1 comments https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/12/post-revolutionary-cuba-society-religion/689018/ In far-eastern Cuba, I met a fisherman who told me that he and others like him, who lacked electricity for refrigeration, have gone back to traditional methods of drying and salting fish. Even getting small amounts of cash can be a trial: Banks sometimes limit withdrawals to 1,000 pesos (less than $1.50) per person per day.
