cross-posted from: https://piefed.world/c/scientificarticles/p/1469388/whatcha-lookin-at-social-anxiety-heightens-brain-sensitivity-to-others-gaze Ever catch someone looking your way and wonder what they’re thinking? For people with social anxiety, that moment may trigger a heightened response in the brain, even though it does not improve their later judgments about what the gaze means. A new study found that young adults with higher levels of social anxiety showed stronger brain responses when a word describing someone’s thoughts or feelings didn’t match what their gaze seemed to convey. Ive always thought it funny how my anxiety always receded when i went in public without my glasses on.

Watch: BBC follows Ukraine's Operation Vivaldi pushing Russia back on frontline A Russian drone zips across the computer screen, startling the commanders keeping watch over the battlefield via a live stream in their bunker. Cigarette in one hand, radio in the other, one of them calls in their own drone to bring it down and warns the soldiers below of the threat. The men are dangerously exposed, on the long walk across open ground from their front line positions. They are being replaced after three months forcing the Russians back. This is part of Operation Vivaldi, a Ukrainian counter-offensive which they say has liberated 277 sq km (106 square miles) in the eastern Donbas region in recent

Chancellor John Healey has said building a third runway at Heathrow Airport has "always been a case for growth", after Prime Minister Andy Burnham refused to say whether he backed the expansion. Speaking from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings in Bangkok, Healey said that airport expansion, including at Heathrow, had been "a big part of jobs and growth" in recent decades. His predecessor Rachel Reeves had put Heathrow expansion at the centrepiece of an argument that Britain is open for business. But Burnham has been more sceptical about the case, telling the BBC it was "a matter for London and Londoners". It follows a warning earlier this week from Heathrow's chief executive,

This whole thing smells like a long rung plot leading to a coup. A whole bunch of rich conservative men are seeking to overthrow the US constitution and take the reigns themselves via proxies. All this is supported by Russia and China and anyone else that wants a bigger share of the world for themselves. It’s very telling they they say if “he” loses the midterms. HE is not running. But they all know what it means. If THEY lose, he’s either being put IN a prison or UNDER one. If they truly care about voter fraud, they should override Trump and ensure external election observers are present at all polling stations and throughout the counting. If they truly want martial law until the election

Watch: Many social platforms already have following-only feeds - here's how they work Warning: This article contains an account of living with an eating disorder Varsha Yajman was already self-conscious about the way she looked when she joined social media as a 13-year-old. Every night as she fell asleep, Varsha would watch a stranger on the internet diarising what they'd consumed that day. "I was like, 'I don't need to eat. I can just watch other people eat'," Varsha tells the BBC.

Efforts to raise hundreds of billions of dollars to preserve the world's oceans, forests, rivers, lakes and other parts of the natural world have fallen short ahead of a key U.N. summit on biodiversity. The yawning gap between the stated ambition of nations to protect biodiversity and what money has been raised will be a central topic in Yerevan, Armenia, when the biodiversity conference, known as COP17, gets started on Monday. The nearly two-week event, scheduled to end Oct. 30, is a chance for nearly 200 countries that are part of the treaty to take stock of their progress on 23 global targets after agreeing to a historic deal crafted in Montreal in 2022. The United States is not a party

Amazon spent years putting microphones in our homes and apparently decided the real problem was that we occasionally leave the house. Now you can pay $75 plus $12 a month to turn every conversation into a potential shopping reminder. The future of privacy is apparently a subscription you forgot to cancel. We always used to tell the tale of that broken TV set, where your door bell rings right in the next second, and the Am*zon delivery guy already brings a new one.

Whether it was youngsters proving their skills or state sabotage, Europe’s most hacked country was left with a mountain of waste after food began cooking in freezers Shortly before midnight last Sunday, the digital thermostats controlling hundreds of supermarket cold aisles across France began to flicker and rise. In a “bizarre and unprecedented” cyber-attack, hackers had remotely overridden the temperature settings on thousands of freezers, fridges and chiller cabinets pushing them from as low as -27C (-16.6F) to well over 50C (122F). Over the next four to six hours, the food inside first defrosted, then slowly began to cook. Shop staff arriving early to restock shelves reported catching a

ORIB is a Manifest V3 browser extension. On www.reddit.com it replaces the current page with a classic layout: subreddit bar, blue header, ranked posts, sidebar, and threaded comments. It reads Reddit's public JSON listings and posts votes, saves, hides, comments, and submissions through Reddit's existing session. The extension itself lives in extension/ . Docs and the store listing stay outside that folder so they are not part of the upload. The content script matches *://www.reddit.com/* and runs at document_start . These paths stay on Reddit's own UI: /chat , /settings , /poll , /mod , and /message . Shortcuts are ignored while focus is in an input, textarea, or content-editable element.

“It’s just timestamps”: the decades-old mystery of the origins of one of the most popular cryptographic standards has been explained. We pursued this long-standing open question of the cryptographic community to settle concerns about ECDSA, which is one of our most widely used cryptographic standards. Readers should take this as a fun closing chapter and the end of years of speculation. There is no action to be taken or things to do differently. Most researchers trusted the curves already. Enjoy. ECDSA is the most widely used elliptic curve cryptography standard. It was adopted by NIST in 2000 as part of the FIPS 186-2 Digital Signature Standard which lists a set of standard elliptic curves

Hi HN! Fakeipedia is an automatic world-building platform which takes an imagined world and makes a whole wiki that you can endlessly explore by clicking red links. I came up with this idea a few months ago after playing around with worldbuilding in Gemini, but I didn't want to release it until a powerful enough model could do it justice, and I decided that Argon is creative enough to write articles that are worth reading. I was surprised how well it turned out and how engaging some of the writing actually is. If you want to generate an article there is a nominal charge attached ($0.90), which helps cover AI/Stripe costs, and I think I just about break even. You can also steer the

Millions kept changing hands long after the election outcomes were effectively settled. Prediction market boosters often tout the platforms as barometers of public opinion, or even “truth machines” offering a clearer picture of where things are headed than polling or other data. In 2024, for example, Kalshi beat many pollsters in forecasting the outcome of the US presidential race. But their trading activity can also tell more perplexing stories. Two global election markets on Polymarket’s offshore platform , for instance, generated over $600 million in trading volume, far more than most political markets typically attract. Most of the activity took place buying and selling contracts tied

As a millennial, I’ve developed a baseline immunity to once in a lifetime devastating economic collapse. Tanking the financial system by means of the AI bubble bursting, right? An AI CEO advising people to stock cash, food and a hand crank radio in case AI takes down banking is some spectacular product marketing. Silicon Valley spent years insisting AI would run everything. Now the contingency plan is to make sure nothing you own needs a computer. Progress! 😳 plus, if the financial system collapses the cash won’t be worth the paper it’s printed on.

Tech billionaires have raised more than $340m to defeat Prop 40, a one-time 5% wealth tax that will fund healthcare and education Tech billionaires have been dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into the fight against a wealth tax in California . They’ve raised more than $340m, and the campaign they’re funding is spending more than $1m a day to defeat the measure, according to state financial disclosures. Californians will vote on the ballot measure, Proposition 40, in early November. If passed, it would require a one-time 5% tax on the state’s billionaires, with the proceeds mostly funding healthcare programs, along with some education and food assistance. The measure has divided

Architects worked with harsh environment to create sustainable buildings in location where fossils were found. The result is something that looks – vaguely – like pterosaur eggs in the sand. Designed with underground exhibition halls, giant light funnels and sprawling solar farms, the museum is able to operate sustainably while withstanding an extremely harsh environment.

The new policy allows Meta to crawl all websites ‘associated’ with a business account. Meta’s new terms appear to give it permission to crawl and scrape websites “associated” with the businesses that use its platforms — including online publishers, according to a report from Nieman Lab . The new terms , which go into effect on October 30th, say Meta can use this outside content to “develop, improve, research,” and “train” its AI products. While Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts says that the company is just “consolidating” its commercial and self-serve ad terms, legal experts tell Nieman Lab that this could allow Meta “to argue its commercial terms supersede other blocking instructions,”

Men and women across India are being paid to record themselves doing domestic jobs as developers train AI robots to do household chores. SCOTT DETROW, HOST: Earlier this month, NPR's international correspondent Diaa Hadid went to a small town in southern India called Karur. She reported on how factory workers are made to train the AI robots that would replace them. She also found a thriving industry to train robots to perform domestic work. Instead of pointer-chasing through B-Tree node hierarchies, this index models the key distribution using streaming piecewise linear regression with strict epsilon error bounds. Lookups compute positions directly on the CPU ALU before a local L1 cache search, reducing memory by 99% and cutting latency by 3x. That is… very neat. I want to explore this more, but I’m pretty sure this could be super useful with some of the parquet stuff my team does

“You mean the footage of the Israeli terrorists beating her up isn’t clear enough?” one critic sardonically asked. October 16, 2026 As Common Dreams reported, Levine—a 63-year-old Jewish American by birth who has reported from war zones including Afghanistan, Kosovo, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, and Syria—was covering Palestinian farmers desperately trying to harvest their olives when around 80 masked settler colonists descended upon them. Armed with rocks, clubs, sticks, assault rifles, and the self-assured belief that their deity figure promised them all the land that was once ruled by Jewish kings millennia ago, the settlers set fire to the olive trees that are the backbone of Palestine’s rural
