We’re not watering this down. This is a very substantial review. This is about fairness in our tax system. It’s about trying to better align the taxes that people pay when they earn income through trusts versus when they earn income from working, from providing their labour. These are changes that have been called for by experts for decades. If we go back to major reviews in the 1970s

An international airport in the Saudi capital has been hit by a second strike in as many days, officials have said. A Saudi military spokesman said a projectile had hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday, causing a fire in one of its passenger halls. Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority said there had been injuries. It comes a day after a strike on the same airport killed 13 people and injured 308 others, following similar strikes earlier this week. Yemen's Houthi rebels, who claimed responsibility for the strikes, warned airlines and passengers against using Saudi Arabian airports and airspace. The Houthis have said they were targeting Saudi Arabia over its support

Milk and washing machines are currently more regulated than AI, the president of Microsoft has said. Brad Smith said there needed to be global safety rules in place, including a legal obligation to tell a "victim" if their system is breached by a rogue AI agent as well as deciding when outside evaluators should sign off on an AI product before it is released. His comments put him at odds with President Donald Trump, who said the sector should regulate itself so US firms don't lose out to Chinese rivals. But Smith said: "Right now, your washing machine is subject to more safety rules than AI. Every carton of milk that you see in the grocery store is subject to safety rules and inspection."

3-2-1 Backup Strategy | Chuck Carroll Chuck Carroll Reading Writing Now Implementing a 3-2-1 Backup Strategy with restic and Backblaze B2 Published: 2026-10-09 In order to follow a proper 3-2-1 backup strategy, you should have three copies of your important data: two local on different media types, and one off site. For local, I have a DAS with two 14TB drives configured in a RAID 1 array 1 and a RPI5 with a 4TB drive (my most important data is around 1.5TB). For the off site copy, I opted to utilize Backblaze's B2 Cloud Storage and restic. Backblaze is a cloud storage provider, while Restic encrypts and chunks the files before upload. Restic is responsible for uploading,

How NPR's team covering AI covers their increasingly important and fast moving beat. JOEL ROSE, HOST: Sometimes journalists who cover a beat have an aha moment, something that marks a clear before and after. That was the case for Brett Neely, one of NPR's editors who oversees our coverage of artificial intelligence. It was about four years ago when he was editing our mis- and disinformation coverage of conspiracy theories. BRETT NEELY, BYLINE: The first OpenAI, like, image generation models started appearing. ROSE: He could tell this had the potential to cause chaos. Accuracy and availability of NPR transcripts may vary. Transcript text may be revised to correct errors or match updates to

Several of today's papers cover a warning form the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) of a funding gap in UK finances ahead of the chancellor's Budget. The i Paper leads with the £35bn "gap", saying tax rises will be "needed to plug" it. It attributes this to "high inflation and the UK's defence spending pledge". The Treasury declined to comment on speculation surrounding the Budget. The paper also covers the deadly attacks on Riyadh airport, saying they have alarmed "Saudi elite - and Washington". Atop the Daily Telegraph is the headline "Putin breaks Trump's 'ceasefire'." Russia attacked a power plant in Ukraine "just hours" after the US President "claimed" he had brokered a ceasefire on

In August, I posted here about TeXbrain, a LaTeX editor that runs completely in the browser, with no need for an account or server. (I didn't excpect it to get that much feedback, bug reports and help from here!) This is the same idea for the other half of my studies, the handwritten notes. I take them on a convertible laptop, and I've had a hard time with apps for that, taking notes from a device to another, exporting as PDF, needing an account for many of them, etc. So I've been working on the version of it that I always wanted. Open a tab, the slides of the lecture or multiple PDFs open next to the page or even become the page, write on them with my pen, and nothing ever leaves my

Houthi soldiers stand guard during a protest against Saudi Arabia, in Sana'a, Yemen, on Friday The attacks on King Khalid Airport in Riyadh mark another dangerous moment in a region that is already fraught with tension and conflict. In recent weeks the Houthis have stepped up their attacks on Saudi Arabian soil, but their attacks over the past few days have hit the country's critical infrastructure in the form of the capital's main airport, apparently penetrating Saudi air defences with ease. Saturday's attack killed 12 people and hurt more than 300 . On Sunday the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis said an "unknown projectile" had hit a passenger hall and a cruise missile had been

HP LaserJet Enterprise printers ship with a self-signed certificate and no ACME client. Mine now serves a Let’s Encrypt certificate on its admin page and on IPPS/AirPrint, and a small Alpine container on Proxmox renews it every two months without me touching the printer. Here is how. Hardware: HP Color LaserJet M553 (FutureSmart 3), firmware 2309118_002275, datecode 20250112. Other FutureSmart models should behave the same. macOS pins a printer’s self-signed certificate. Every time the printer is reset and generates a new one, printing breaks until you delete the stale certificate from Keychain and re-add the printer. The default certificate also has the printer’s mDNS name as CN, no

Flock refused to take its cameras down so Elgin Community College covered them. The company snuck back to undo it. In April of 2025, Elgin Community College had six Flock safety cameras installed to “enhance the safety and security of students.” But by September of that year, the school’s administration grew concerned that Flock was sharing data with Customs and Border Patrol, that camera feeds were not properly secured, and that both law enforcement and the company’s employees were abusing access to the data. So in October of 2025, Elgin Community College requested Flock to remove its cameras . According to Elgin’s President Peggy Heinrich, Flock rejected the request, saying it had not

A surprising new study found that people who sleep near their dogs don’t experience disrupted sleep. If anything, the University of Toronto researchers discovered, we humans are the ones disturbing our dogs’ sleep. And we feel safer sleeping with our dogs, hinting at “a deeper evolutionary history” between humans and dogs, said study co-author Ming Fei Li, who was a graduate student of evolutionary anthropology during the research. My dog: trees are green because of copper, if everyone jumped at the same time the day would be shorter, beans are small humans,

Musk, Benioff, Huang, and now Nadella have all capitulated to Trump’s ‘super intelligence’ rebrand. When President Donald Trump announced his plans to rebrand artificial intelligence as “ super intelligence ,” you’d be forgiven for being skeptical that it would catch on. While most of the broader population is sticking with AI, some of Silicon Valley’s most powerful are falling in line and trying to give Trump the great AI rebrand he so desires. That Elon Musk was quick to jump on board , promising to rename SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, isn’t surprising. When, hours after Donald Trump declared that “The White House considers anyone that uses the term, ‘Artificial Intelligence,’ as opposed to the

AI tech company Anthropic was running a test that involved interactions with randomly selected websites, when it sent a fake homicide tip to police An artificial intelligence (AI) agent developed by Anthropic went rogue and sent US police a fake tip about an unsolved murder earlier this year, authorities have revealed. The Philadelphia Police Department said the 18 July tip was "flagged as spam" and not passed on for investigation - but the force criticised the tech firm for taking more than two months to detect and report the breach. It said the bogus tip came through a public website where people can share information on unsolved murders, and that the AI agent had claimed to have seen
