Bill to authorise production expansion at Mount Pleasant coalmine, subject to a landmark high court decision, criticised as ‘legislative overreach’ The Minns government says it will introduce special legislation to allow a mine in the New South Wales Hunter Valley that was the subject of high court proceedings to increase its coal production by 32% per year. The premier, Chris Minns , said the bill would authorise MACH Energy to increase the annual coal output at its Mount Pleasant coalmine by 4m tonnes to 16.5MT per year until 2032. He claimed it was necessary to save 400 jobs at the site before Christmas. The move comes less than two weeks after the high court ruled that the approval of

I saw this LinkedIn post from a Meta engineer and it resonated with me: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/ali-hamie_im-an-engineer-at-meta-and-i-never-felt-share-7517317918666211328-7C8N > I'm an engineer at Meta and I never felt this uncomfortable doing my job. I'm writing code these days and it all feels like a black box. This new standard of shipping with AI is moving so fast that if we're going to spend our time checking each line of code, it's going to take forever. That means you can end up with systems you've built where you don't truly understand how all the code works. You understand the high level, but not every detail. And maybe this is becoming the new standard. It goes against

Police have been guarding the hospital in Melbourne where independent MP Helen Haines is being treated As increasingly frequent acts of violence against politicians have shocked the globe in recent years, Australia has watched on with a contradictory feeling: that attacks like that could not happen here, and that it was only a matter of time until they did. Australians will tell you this is a largely peaceful society with a comparatively civil public discourse. Violence targeting politicians has been rare, the bungled assassination of Labor leader Arthur Calwell in 1966 now a distant and fleeting memory. But MPs and public figures – backed by experts – have been warning of a volcano of

Yemen's government said the missile strike killed recruits to its internal security forces (file photo) More than 50 security personnel have been killed and 200 injured in a Houthi missile strike on a camp in Yemen's central province of Shabwa, local authorities say. A spokesman for the Saudi-backed Yemeni armed forces said the Iran-backed group launched three ballistic missiles at al-Alam camp near Ataq city, which was being used as a training centre for recruits to the security forces and police. The head of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, condemned what he called the "criminal attack" and promised a "firm response". The Houthis' military spokesman said they had

If you buy something from a link, The Verge may earn a commission. See our ethics statement. Today, I’m talking with Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, who has a lot of thoughts about AI, tech, and privacy. If you’ve been listening to the show, you know that one of my running theories is that those issues are driving a big and maybe kind of unexpected political realignment — and with the midterms coming up next month, and early voting already underway in a lot of places, the stakes are pretty high right now. So I asked Gov. Pritzker about all that, and he was surprisingly willing to dive right into the absolute existential weeds of what government is even for. You’ll hear him say — and it’s hard to

The conviction belonged to a different man, and on September 24 the Aachen Regional Court [in Germany] banned Google from repeating it, ruling that the company answers for what its AI Mode says. It is the second German court this year to treat Google’s AI answers as Google’s own words, and the first ruling to say so has now been settled rather than tested on appeal. … The doctor asked Google to delete the text on August 28

Sébastien Lecornu says new measures will be put in place from tonight Macron criticises ‘unbridled violence’ after 2,400 arrests across France French PM Lecornu says he has asked prefects to implement “a number of partial curfews” in certain “localised” urban areas to stop further disorder, which he attributes to “the extreme-left” and some criminal elements. We will no doubt hear more on this from local authorities, as in the example of Marseille ( 10:32 ).

Almost all modern machines use two’s complement to represent integers. This representation is asymmetric, in the sense that the most negative number has no corresponding positive number. For example, with signed 8-bit numbers, the most negative number is -128 , whilst the most positive number is 127 . The Futhark compiler has multiple backends, but the most important ones work by generating C code. This has many practical advantages: It is easy to debug the generated code because it is easy to read and modify by hand. Most systems have a C compiler (or easy access to one), meaning Futhark has fewer dependencies, is portable, and doesn’t need to bundle native code generators. Many languages

A Saudi national charged with secretly planting a recording device in one of OpenAI's meeting rooms has been accused of having "considerable support" from the Saudi government, according to a court filing , external in California. US prosecutors claimed Abdulrahman Alfozan, who worked for the AI firm, was in "frequent communication... with a member of the Saudi royal family", and say a member of the country's military paid for a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia for his wife and son after his arrest. It was argued the 35-year-old engineer therefore posed a flight risk and should be detained, pending trial. The Saudi government did not immediately respond to BBC requests for comment. Alfozan
