Rick Rycroft/AP hide caption MELBOURNE, Australia — A prisoner on Monday lost his challenge to an Australian state's ban on inmates eating Vegemite after he argued in court that withholding the polarizing yeast-based spread breached his human right to "enjoy his culture as an Australian." Andre McKechnie, 55, who is serving a life sentence for murder, took his battle for the salty, sticky, black-brown byproduct of brewing beer to the Supreme Court of the state of Victoria last year. Anthropic has warned artificial intelligence (AI) could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity" as it unveiled details of its planned blockbuster stock market listing in the US. The firm's valuation is expected to exceed that of SpaceX, which was the biggest-ever listing at an initial valuation of about $1.8 trillion in the summer. Anthropic has not yet disclosed the number of shares to be released, their price range, or a date for the listing. The Claude chatbot developer reported $16.3bn (£12.2bn) of revenue in the first half of the year, with losses of more than $80.7bn. Anthropic, which said it will list on the Nasdaq under the symbol ANT, will be the first fully AI-focused

Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a fourth term in office in a dramatic comeback over his right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro. Left-wing leader Lula took 51.79% of votes, becoming the first president since the return to civilian rule in 1985 to win an election after losing the first round of voting. Lula told celebratory crowds this election is a "loss for negativity, lies", later adding "long live democracy". Flávio Bolsonaro, who is the son of convicted former president Jair Bolsonaro, has so far refused to recognise the result and called for it to be annulled, which experts say is unlikely. In an unprecedented move, polls were also extended for two hours on Sunday

Meghan pictured during an engagement on her last visit to Australia in April The Duchess of Sussex has been confirmed as a co-host of the new season of Junior MasterChef Australia. Meghan will join the 2027 series as a "special guest" with fellow host Poh Ling Yeow, according to Australia's Channel 10. The duchess said she "can't wait" to take part in the programme after an appearance as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia last year. It was the show's largest Sunday audience since 2023, according to the statement from Paramount ANZ. The announcement comes as Meghan faces increased scrutiny due to her father Thomas Markle being accused of child sexual abuse. He denies the allegations.

The always-on AI personal assistant, which keeps working in the background even when you aren’t asking it to, is this year’s answer to the question of how people will actually use deep learning models. The startup Instinct became an overnight sensation, and Meta put the full force of its marketing behind its assistant, Muse. OpenAI wasn’t going to be left out. The company released dots , its assistant offering, at its developer day in late September. Alexander Embiricos, who leads OpenAI’s enterprise product team, joined us at TechCrunch Disrupt this month to explain where the product came from—starting with the question of why so many companies seem to be turning to cutesy mascots as

Former FBI Director James Comey speaks during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill, Thursday, June 8, 2017, in Washington. Alex Brandon/AP hide caption WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is attempting to prosecute James Comey for what it calls a decade-old leak of classified information, an effort the former FBI director's lawyers immediately dismissed as invalid and outside the legal time limit for when the Justice Department can file a criminal indictment. The allegations from the Justice Department were revealed Monday in newly unsealed court documents that shed light on a closed-door fight that represents an unmistakable escalation in the administration's

Did you know OBS or FFmpeg can go directly into a video conference? You configure everything, so you control exactly the quality you are going to get. WHIP support means these tools now speak the protocol of video conferencing. Send them an angry email. Tell them you don't want their crappy proprietary client. You want open standards that let you bring the tools you prefer. WHIP is an open standard for sending live video to a service using WebRTC. Your provider gives you a server URL and a stream key, called a bearer token. Before to join a conference call each client had to run custom code. That means FFmpeg/OBS would never be able to join. A lack of control. Your browser is picking a

This time OpenAI says it’s taking new advice from scientists on how to release the results. Less than a month after its mass release of hundreds of manuscripts that it said contained solutions to long-standing mathematics questions, OpenAI is back with three more “major” discoveries in math, computer science, and physics . Local smoothing for the Euclidean wave equation. The proof uses an auxiliary partial differential equation to establish Sogge’s local smoothing for waves in every spatial dimension at least two. It also yields the Kakeya maximal and dimension conjectures and Stein’s spherical restriction estimates throughout the interior of the conjectured range. We are releasing the

submitted by technocrit to science 52 points | 16 comments https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03393-5 The idea at the core of the book, published in 1976, was thrillingly simple: that a living organism is just a gene’s way of making more organisms that can carry the gene down the generations. Back then, The Selfish Gene seemed pretty harmless. Dawkins’s ideas tracked with mainstream sociobiology. It was a popular book that covered exactly the sort of ideas that my lecturers were already teaching. Re-reading it now, with decades of scholarship in the history of biology under my belt, it seems less benign. The determinism baked into the “gene’s-eye view” in the book troubles me, as

They’re based on six-year-old technology, but the XM4C still deliver respectable performance, and I love using them. If you buy something from a link, The Verge may earn a commission. See our ethics statement. When Sony announced the WH-1000XM4C headphones, I was perplexed. A product revamp usually includes at least one or two significant improvements. Or if it’s a nostalgia play, it’s from a decades-old product and not one that came out in 2020. Beyond a few minor tweaks, though, the XM4C are remarkably similar to their six-year-old namesake, the beloved WH-1000XM4 . They even use the same processor for active noise cancellation (ANC). And while I went into this review questioning the

Suit that cites 2025 Guardian investigation alleges ‘pattern of inaccurate pricing’ that ‘affects millions of purchases’ The Federal Trade Commission and 20 states have sued Dollar General, the nation’s largest dollar-store chain, for persistently overcharging customers at its more than 20,000 stores across the United States. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Nashville, cites a Guardian investigation published last December. “Dollar General has for years engaged in deceptive conduct that harms the very consumers it claims to serve,” said the 95-page legal complaint. In at least one case I noticed that the prices on their app were lower than the ones in the store itself.

Even getting small amounts of cash can be a trial: Banks sometimes limit withdrawals to 1,000 pesos (less than $1.50) per person per day.

Anthropic is taking a big step toward a blockbuster stock listing that would rank among the biggest IPOs ever. Patrick Sison/AP Photo hide caption The artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, maker of the hugely popular Claude AI models, has taken a major step toward holding an initial public offering that analysts expect to be one of the biggest ever. Anthropic filed final paperwork with regulators on Monday for an IPO under the ticker symbol ANT that reports have said could value the company at between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion . That would put it in league with Elon Musk's rocketry and AI company SpaceX, which was valued at around $1.8 trillion when it listed in June . Anthropic's

Running out of space on your Nintendo Switch 2? Thankfully, Samsung’s P9 MicroSD Express card is discounted at multiple retailers, with the 256GB version going for $47.99 ( Amazon , B&H Photo ) and the 512GB version $99 ( Amazon , B&H Photo ). The smaller card typically sells for around $80, and the larger option usually sells between $150 and $200, though both are higher than their original launch prices, likely because of the ongoing memory shortage. The P9 is great if you need more storage for your Nintendo
