Marathon’s greatest competitor, Eliud Kipchoge, has sent a message to the next generation declaring that he’s not done yet. The 41-year-old Kenyan revelled in his Melbourne Marathon debut on Sunday, breaking the race record and delighting thousands of fans at the MCG finish. Beating the old race mark by two seconds, his two hours nine minutes and 10 seconds over a new course gave Kipchoge his first marathon win in three years. Jimmy Whelan, a former Australian professional cyclist, was with the two-time Olympic champion and former world record-holder until about 30km. Then Kipchoge went up a gear and dominated to the finish. Looking as though he has just done a training run, Kipchoge then

A surprising new study found that people who sleep near their dogs don’t experience disrupted sleep. If anything, the University of Toronto researchers discovered, we humans are the ones disturbing our dogs’ sleep. And we feel safer sleeping with our dogs, hinting at “a deeper evolutionary history” between humans and dogs, said study co-author Ming Fei Li, who was a graduate student of evolutionary anthropology during the research. My dog: trees are green because of copper, if everyone jumped at the same time the day would be shorter, beans are small humans,

An international airport in the Saudi capital has been hit by a second strike in as many days, officials have said. A Saudi military spokesman said a projectile had hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday, causing a fire in one of its passenger halls. Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority said there had been injuries. It comes a day after a strike on the same airport killed 13 people and injured 308 others, following similar strikes earlier this week. Yemen's Houthi rebels, who claimed responsibility for the strikes, warned airlines and passengers against using Saudi Arabian airports and airspace. The Houthis have said they were targeting Saudi Arabia over its support

How NPR's team covering AI covers their increasingly important and fast moving beat. JOEL ROSE, HOST: Sometimes journalists who cover a beat have an aha moment, something that marks a clear before and after. That was the case for Brett Neely, one of NPR's editors who oversees our coverage of artificial intelligence. It was about four years ago when he was editing our mis- and disinformation coverage of conspiracy theories. BRETT NEELY, BYLINE: The first OpenAI, like, image generation models started appearing. ROSE: He could tell this had the potential to cause chaos. Accuracy and availability of NPR transcripts may vary. Transcript text may be revised to correct errors or match updates to

Houthi soldiers stand guard during a protest against Saudi Arabia, in Sana'a, Yemen, on Friday The attacks on King Khalid Airport in Riyadh mark another dangerous moment in a region that is already fraught with tension and conflict. In recent weeks the Houthis have stepped up their attacks on Saudi Arabian soil, but their attacks over the past few days have hit the country's critical infrastructure in the form of the capital's main airport, apparently penetrating Saudi air defences with ease. Saturday's attack killed 12 people and hurt more than 300 . On Sunday the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis said an "unknown projectile" had hit a passenger hall and a cruise missile had been

AI tech company Anthropic was running a test that involved interactions with randomly selected websites, when it sent a fake homicide tip to police An artificial intelligence (AI) agent developed by Anthropic went rogue and sent US police a fake tip about an unsolved murder earlier this year, authorities have revealed. The Philadelphia Police Department said the 18 July tip was "flagged as spam" and not passed on for investigation - but the force criticised the tech firm for taking more than two months to detect and report the breach. It said the bogus tip came through a public website where people can share information on unsolved murders, and that the AI agent had claimed to have seen

HP LaserJet Enterprise printers ship with a self-signed certificate and no ACME client. Mine now serves a Let’s Encrypt certificate on its admin page and on IPPS/AirPrint, and a small Alpine container on Proxmox renews it every two months without me touching the printer. Here is how. Hardware: HP Color LaserJet M553 (FutureSmart 3), firmware 2309118_002275, datecode 20250112. Other FutureSmart models should behave the same. macOS pins a printer’s self-signed certificate. Every time the printer is reset and generates a new one, printing breaks until you delete the stale certificate from Keychain and re-add the printer. The default certificate also has the printer’s mDNS name as CN, no

It’s like using cloud-based AI tools, but the privacy makes it more appealing. I’m embarking on a journey I’ve so far been hesitant to go on: actually using AI on the regular. Giving my most personal data to cloud services has been a major hold up for me, but it’s increasingly possible to run powerful models locally to see what they’re capable of. Is this tech so useful that it’s worth throwing gobs of money at a computer or a laptop with lots of overpriced RAM? I’ll try to help you find out. A big part of Apple’s pitch for its new Mac desktops is how good they are for local AI, and there’s an entire line of new RTX Spark Windows machines landing imminently with up to 128GB of RAM aimed at
