Pope Leo arrived at Rome's Gemelli Hospital ahead of his surgery on Tuesday Pope Leo XIV has been admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital for surgery to remove a lump on his lung, detected during what the Vatican has described as "routine checks". The 71-year-old pontiff was met at the hospital by a large crowd, some of whom had been waiting outside for several hours to catch a glimpse of him. They cheered greetings and well wishes as he passed, waving and smiling back through the lowered back window of his car. He was then met by staff on the hospital steps. "I'm sorry," one of them commiserated, to which the Pope gave a smile and a shrug. "We're here for you," he was assured.

submitted by nark3d to programming 10 points | 1 comments Parnas wrote down the test in 1972 and most codebases still fail it. A module is characterised by the design decision it hides from every other module. That’s the whole rule. Private fields, protected methods, a tidy export list, none of that counts for anything if the decision underneath is still visible to everyone who calls in. The getter and setter pair. A class takes a field private, then exposes read and write for it. Every caller can reach in and set the thing, so the module has fused itself to every callsite that knows about its insides, exactly as if the field had been public. The keyword did the syntactic part and nobody

Rayan Cherki has 16 more goal involvements than Florian Wirtz since moving to the Premier League At the end of the 2024-25 season, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot flew to the south of France to honour talks with Rayan Cherki. Cherki was on Liverpool 's shortlist in their hunt for an attacking midfielder but the main target was Florian Wirtz - who was also wanted by Bayern Munich and Manchester City . Once Wirtz said his preference was to move to Anfield and join the then-Premier League champions, the £116m deal became a formality. At the time, his arrival felt like a quality acquisition for Liverpool , but more than a year on things are still not clicking.

Katie Zacharia said today the administration has asked Kimberley Guilfoyle , the US ambassador to Greece, to resign. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” the new press secretary said at her first media briefing, without providing any further details. A reminder that Guilfoyle, who was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr, the president’s son, was under immense scrutiny after the Wall Street Journal reported on a series of questionable acts prior to securing her role in Athens. This included an alleged threat to a host country official, accepting improper gifts and services and offering to wield influence inside the administration in return for the payment of a

A viral photo purporting to show Mia Goth in a T-shirt seemingly referencing her divorce spread from Instagram across the web. It was AI. Earlier this month, news broke that actress Mia Goth had filed for divorce from actor and filmmaker Shia LaBeouf. An Instagram post from the account miagoth_ — marked with a blue verified checkmark — quickly spread. The post shows Goth in a T-shirt that reads “MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN” in bold black letters. The Beyoncé song “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” had been added to the Instagram post. Hundreds of thousands of people — including some in the entertainment industry — liked the image, and entertainment outlets like OK! and even People wrote about

So I built that: “ask my blog” 3 . Search finds the four most relevant passages, and a small language model running in your browser summarises them in two sentences. Nothing you type leaves your machine. And because “a small model summarizes things” is exactly the sort of sentence that hides a lot of made-up nonsense, I measured how often it’s actually faithful to what I wrote. Turns out small models have some limitations. The page is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) with every piece running client-side: The passages are shown first, as cards, and the summary will sit above them. You can search without loading a model at all; you just get the passages.

The U.S. government continues to pay for ads promoting President Trump , even after he announced that his MAGA Inc. super PAC would take over funding. A federal judge ordered the ads to be taken down, yet they remained on air. An NPR analysis of data from AdImpact finds that nearly $22 million in taxpayer funds have been spent since the campaign began in late September. Almost $10 million of that was spent after Trump pledged on an Oct. 5 Truth Social post to fund the campaign privately. President Trump leaves the stage after speaking during an election rally in Syracuse, New York on Oct. 9, 2026. Alex

A climate protester has been restrained by NSW MPs after he climbed over a barrier to interrupt question time to protest against the approval of the Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) coalmine extension by the state’s Independent Planning Commission last month. Earlier this afternoon, question time was interrupted for several minutes by the protest, during which eight activists from environmental advocacy group Rising Tide threw pages of government and academic climate reports into the chamber, including the Net Zero Commission’s report on coalmining emissions, which said mine expansions are against the state’s legislated emissions reduction targets. In the parliamentary livestream, MPs

submitted by technocrit to science 20 points | 0 comments https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03221-w Ntice something wrong at your university? Perhaps you witness bullying of a colleague, data fabrication or a professor having an affair with an undergraduate student? You do what you are supposed to do: you report it. You raise the matter with the head of department and research-integrity office. After all, such behaviour is contrary to the university’s values and mission statement. Managers will surely want to know and will take action — as you would expect. This is not what happened to me. In 2021, I raised concerns over a senior colleague’s treatment of a female administrator at

Actor Seth Green—yes, that one—has seen Godzilla Minus Zero and says it’s awesome. While introducing the New York Comic Con panel for the 39th film in the Godzilla franchise, Green stressed that the filmmakers behind the movie “have created kaiju that feel physically real and, trust me, emotionally terrifying.” While a lot of that terror came from the work of Oscar-winning visual effects artist Tatsuji Nojima, some it came from the shrieking of Godzilla and his three-headed nemesis, King Ghidorah . Those roars were the work of sound designer Natsuko Inoue and her team, who created the monsters’ outsize vocalizations by rolling speakers to the top of an outdoor dam—much to the horror of

A first look at Apple’s new video doorbell, security cameras, thermostats, and more. We’ve just gotten a closer look at Apple’s new video doorbell, security cameras, a door lock, and thermostats following the company’s “Welcome Home” event on Tuesday. The six new devices are part of a new Apple Home Collection , which the company co-developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. The LG smart lock costs $349 and comes with support for Apple Home Key, allowing you to unlock your door hands-free with UWB. You can unlock the door with a PIN code, too, or by using the physical keyhole beneath the keypad. There’s also a new $249 video doorbell from LG. It comes with two cameras that

Given that this issue has been shared online and is currently getting quite a few visitors, here's some additional context. Rust's type system is intended to prevent memory unsafety. Upholding this promise is something we take very seriously, which is why we've been working on things like the next-generation trait solver , the region constraint rework , and more generally Project Zero . It is a large priority of the Types Team to fix all type system unsoundnesses and to work towards there being a solid foundation to minimize the risk of unknown ones. This bug is a P-high issue and would have been P-critical regardless of whether people encountered it in the wild. The reason that it is "only

Co-author: “The unique geometry of the valves is the key; they act as collapsible pistons” to deliver venom. Honey bees are known to leave their stingers embedded in tender flesh once they sting you and fly away. Scientists have now determined that the stinger is able to continue pumping venom into its unfortunate victim even after the bee flies away, thanks to a unique double-piston pump-like mechanism, according to a new paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Different species have evolved different mechanisms for delivering venom, which involves piercing the skin and then pumping venom from a gland or reservoir. Spiders, for instance, have muscles
