The U.S. government continues to pay for ads promoting President Trump , even after he announced that his MAGA Inc. super PAC would take over funding. A federal judge ordered the ads to be taken down, yet they remained on air. An NPR analysis of data from AdImpact finds that nearly $22 million in taxpayer funds have been spent since the campaign began in late September. Almost $10 million of that was spent after Trump pledged on an Oct. 5 Truth Social post to fund the campaign privately. President Trump leaves the stage after speaking during an election rally in Syracuse, New York on Oct. 9, 2026. Alex

The long-delayed bridge will formally open on Thursday, according to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency. China and North Korea will officially open the New Yalu River Bridge to traffic on Thursday, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reports. China completed its side of the bridge in 2014, hoping to boost trade ties. However, North Korea left its side unfinished for years as relations soured after Beijing supported United Nations sanctions over Pyongyang’s nuclear tests. The first bridge connecting Russia and North Korea also opened earlier this month. China’s exports to North Korea rose to a six-year high of $2.3bn last year, a 25 percent increase from the previous year. Chinese

Actor Seth Green—yes, that one—has seen Godzilla Minus Zero and says it’s awesome. While introducing the New York Comic Con panel for the 39th film in the Godzilla franchise, Green stressed that the filmmakers behind the movie “have created kaiju that feel physically real and, trust me, emotionally terrifying.” While a lot of that terror came from the work of Oscar-winning visual effects artist Tatsuji Nojima, some it came from the shrieking of Godzilla and his three-headed nemesis, King Ghidorah . Those roars were the work of sound designer Natsuko Inoue and her team, who created the monsters’ outsize vocalizations by rolling speakers to the top of an outdoor dam—much to the horror of

Rayan Cherki has 16 more goal involvements than Florian Wirtz since moving to the Premier League At the end of the 2024-25 season, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot flew to the south of France to honour talks with Rayan Cherki. Cherki was on Liverpool 's shortlist in their hunt for an attacking midfielder but the main target was Florian Wirtz - who was also wanted by Bayern Munich and Manchester City . Once Wirtz said his preference was to move to Anfield and join the then-Premier League champions, the £116m deal became a formality. At the time, his arrival felt like a quality acquisition for Liverpool , but more than a year on things are still not clicking.

An engineer at OpenAI allegedly concealed an audio recording device in a piece of toilet paper and attached it behind a monitor inside an executive conference room at one of the company’s San Francisco offices, according to a criminal complaint unsealed on Tuesday. Abdulrahman Alfozan, whom federal prosecutors describe as a 35-year-old Saudi Arabian national and US permanent resident, allegedly spent several weeks querying an unspecified “productivity agent” and an “AI chatbot” to plan his alleged surveillance operation. He used an internal OpenAI tool to ask about meetings scheduled in the targeted conference room. He also appears to have used a chatbot account associated with his spouse

I sometimes read Show HN, and there is literally no creativity at all: note-taker app after note-taker clone. Everyone is essentially looking at what’s already there, and they say, “Why can’t I create the exact same product, but worse, and add an AI suffix?” There is nothing creative about AI. Show HN might as well be renamed “Prompt HN.” These promoters always say, “Prompting makes me efficient; I don’t have to write code by hand anymore.” Great. What has your “efficiency” gotten you? Yet another note-taker with an “AI” suffix? I could take notes in 1990. Where did the actual engineers go? Surely they aren’t all selling ads at Facebook’s spyware empire? Where are the transistor, the C

Pope Leo XIV arrives at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, where doctors operated to remove part of his lung. Alessandra Tarantino/AP hide caption Pope Leo XIV had surgery on Tuesday to remove a cancerous growth in his lung, the Vatican announced. The surgery, performed at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, involved removing the lower lobe of the Pope's right lung, according to a statement by Leo's doctors released by the church. Lung tissue examined after the surgery confirmed a previous test that revealed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, the Vatican said. Adenocarcinoma of the lung is the most common form of lung cancer in the United States, representing about 40%

Pope Leo arrived at Rome's Gemelli Hospital ahead of his surgery on Tuesday Pope Leo XIV has been admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital for surgery to remove a lump on his lung, detected during what the Vatican has described as "routine checks". The 71-year-old pontiff was met at the hospital by a large crowd, some of whom had been waiting outside for several hours to catch a glimpse of him. They cheered greetings and well wishes as he passed, waving and smiling back through the lowered back window of his car. He was then met by staff on the hospital steps. "I'm sorry," one of them commiserated, to which the Pope gave a smile and a shrug. "We're here for you," he was assured.

The U.S. Department of Justice is warning that hackers working for the North Korean regime are increasingly relying on Americans to facilitate the hacking of U.S. companies. In an announcement on Tuesday, prosecutors said they have indicted and arrested at least two people, and conducted searches across dozens of suspected “laptop farms” in Texas. The computers were allegedly used by North Koreans to remotely hack into American companies and steal sensitive data. According to the DOJ, federal authorities seized over 180 computers that they believe American companies had shipped out to their newly hired employees, not realizing that they were sanctioned North Korean spies who had used stolen

Katie Zacharia said today the administration has asked Kimberley Guilfoyle , the US ambassador to Greece, to resign. “She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” the new press secretary said at her first media briefing, without providing any further details. A reminder that Guilfoyle, who was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr, the president’s son, was under immense scrutiny after the Wall Street Journal reported on a series of questionable acts prior to securing her role in Athens. This included an alleged threat to a host country official, accepting improper gifts and services and offering to wield influence inside the administration in return for the payment of a

Discovery of ‘sophisticated’ gadget adds to company’s list of privacy concerns after hackings by rogue agents OpenAI said it has found a hidden recording device in one of its offices and has referred the matter to the FBI. One of its employees has been arrested. In a statement on Tuesday, the San Francisco-based AI company said it discovered the “sophisticated recording device” and used one of its “models to understand the device and where it had come from”. The company has identified “that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier”, adding: “At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer

Co-author: “The unique geometry of the valves is the key; they act as collapsible pistons” to deliver venom. Honey bees are known to leave their stingers embedded in tender flesh once they sting you and fly away. Scientists have now determined that the stinger is able to continue pumping venom into its unfortunate victim even after the bee flies away, thanks to a unique double-piston pump-like mechanism, according to a new paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Different species have evolved different mechanisms for delivering venom, which involves piercing the skin and then pumping venom from a gland or reservoir. Spiders, for instance, have muscles
