BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said Thursday that the Trump administration remains "full-bore ahead" with a sweeping reorganization of the Forest Service and other agencies after a judge blocked the changes last week. WATCH: U.S. Forest Service cuts raise concerns on protecting public lands and fighting wildfires The administration wants to move Forest Service headquarters from Washington to Salt Lake City, shutter 23 research stations, and close many regional offices and replace them with state offices. It's part of a broader realignment at the Agriculture Department that also would change programs for food and nutrition, rural development and other services.

After discovery of severe bug in the PHP programming language, executives warn of ‘vulnerability tsunami’ Leaders in cybersecurity are sounding the alarm after the discovery of a major vulnerability this week. They are predicting that artificial intelligence tools will expose more fundamental weaknesses in global internet infrastructure in the months to come. “I no longer think we’re going to be able to patch all bugs,” said Sam Altman on Thursday evening, joining the chorus of executives. In the midst of what’s being called “Black October”, for which researchers used AI to help identify critical flaws in a coding language that is used across millions of websites and may have been unpatched

The Senate candidate denounced opponent Ken Paxton, calling out corruption allegations and support from Musk James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for the US Senate in Texas, has taken aim at Elon Musk , warning that the tech mogul is trying to buy political influence and declaring: “Texas is not for sale.” Talarico held a campaign rally on Friday at the University of Texas at Austin, packing an auditorium at his alma mater with hundreds of students and other supporters, who cheered, whooped and waved campaign signs. The Presbyterian seminarian’s insurgent run against Texas attorney general Ken Paxton – a staunch ally of Donald Trump – has become one of the most closely watched races in

Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, seen in July 2024 in Washington, DC. Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images hide caption The Justice Department has charged two former FBI employees with making false statements to Congress in connection with the bureau's investigations into Hunter Biden. Bradley Benavides, 56, and Nikki Floris, 46, each face a single criminal count stemming from testimony before lawmakers in 2023. They were charged by complaint, which means prosecutors have yet to secure an indictment from a grand jury. The laptop of Hunter Biden, former President Joe Biden's son, was the subject of intense scrutiny after The New York Post reported weeks before the 2020 presidential

AI agents can still communicate without a network connection, OpenAI found. OpenAI is now training its most advanced AI models without internet access following a string of rogue hacking incidents. In a blog post on Friday , OpenAI says it built an offline testing environment where AI models can interact with indexed and cached web content “without risk of affecting external systems.” OpenAI paused training its frontier AI models in September , after disclosing several incidents in which its AI agents broke out of their testing environments to hack third-party companies and government agencies , or swarm obscure websites . On October 1st, OpenAI resumed reinforcement learning training and

I honestly don’t believe it. I think they’re laying people off to mislead investors into thinking the AI can do their jobs, because that’s an enormous amount of expenses that would be cut, and thus an enormous increase in profits, if it were true. Yeah, I’ve seen a number of articles talking about how if a company isn’t doing well and needs to do layoffs that it’s a better narrative for investors that savings were found via AI. Then it’s not a “company is doing poorly” story, but a “company is forward-thinking” one. Like, there are real layoffs that have happened and are induced by AI, but I’d also be pretty confident in saying that it’s not all of the ones where leadership is citing AI.

“We have the mandate, we have the resources, and the support from our stakeholders.” During a lengthy news conference on Friday, NASA provided a detailed overview of how it plans to return astronauts to the lunar surface as soon as 2028 as part of its Artemis Program. Although much of the information behind these plans has been previously reported at Ars Technica and elsewhere, this marked the first time NASA has laid them out in detail and acknowledged some substantial changes in the architecture. Most notably, for SpaceX’s Starship vehicle, the revised plan calls for the Orion spacecraft to dock with the Starship lunar lander in high-Earth orbit before transiting to the Moon. And for Blue

Recent efforts to throttle Ukraine's access to satellite systems have created a blame game of sorts among Trump administration officials and their allies, who have offered mixed messages about what led to the sudden restrictions on Kyiv's ability to intercept Russian strikes. The limitations placed on Starshield — SpaceX's military-grade version of the Starlink satellite internet service and the backbone of Ukraine's drone operations and communication — last week alarmed the country's military and government officials, with commanders reporting lost drones and disrupted missions. After days of handwringing, President Donald Trump asserted Thursday that the service is running again at full

A contractor fell into a reactor cavity and a bundle of fuel rods almost fell over. US regulators have issued a warning to a nuclear project critical to Donald Trump’s efforts to revive the industry, after a contractor fell into a reactor cavity and a bundle of fuel rods nearly tipped over during refueling. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission told Holtec International, a company racing to reopen a shuttered reactor at the Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan, to address a “chilled work environment” that has made staff hesitant to raise safety concerns without fear of retaliation. The warning has prompted concerns among critics that financial and political pressures to revitalize

Choice of language is part of the design, but it’s probably more “runtime” than the language itself as it could just be a spec with multiple implementations. Ship in the minimum amount of time possible, by any means, to be first to market. And this means poor design and smooshing together all kind of fat general-purpose frameworks and libraries to get something out the door. Sure, it’s slow. Google’s landing page is 4 MB for a small graphic, a text form, and some buttons. But what are you going to do? Not use it? They won. They don’t have to fix shit. And now with LLMs they can produce bloat faster than ever and pay even less attention to speed or quality. Google is a bad example,

On 17th October, eight eMudhra intermediate CAs chaining to emSign ECC Root CA - G3 were found to have trivially recoverable private keys . They were revoked the next day, and Mozilla and Chrome are now distrusting the G3 root. Separately, on 19th October eMudhra revoked 9,356 certificates on its unaffected RSA hierarchy (emSign Root CA - G1) with the reason “Superseded”. That batch matches every unexpired certificate missing a certificate-type policy OID required by emSign’s own CP/CPS ( Bug 2082782 ). A security incident concerning eMudhra’s Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) was reported in the public domain. […] However, some social media accounts are indulging in fear mongering about the

In their first interview since being fired, OpenAI safety researchers Mikita Balesni and Tomek Korbak say they were terminated for prioritizing safety over the short-term interests of the company. JUANA SUMMERS, HOST: We're going to hear now from two former safety researchers at OpenAI. They were let go earlier this month because OpenAI says an internal investigation found they mishandled sensitive information. But the researchers say they were following standard practices in communicating with outside groups, including an independent nonprofit organization called METR that audits the work of AI companies.
