Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of US President Donald Trump, was in Oslo to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky US special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Wednesday to discuss proposals on ending Russia's years-long conflict with Ukraine. The talks come one day after Witkoff's meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo, which a US official described as "constructive". Kyiv previously accused the US of withholding key intelligence - a claim rejected as "scandalous" by Washington. Zelensky said on Tuesday that intelligence sharing with the US on Russian missile attacks "works now". Zelensky and his European

Some users have reported that their YouTube dislike button has been moved to the three-dots menu. YouTube appears to be testing hiding the dislike button on videos, as reported by 9to5Google . At least two users on X have recently shared screenshots of the dislike button now being placed in the three-dots submenu, and a user on Reddit also shared an image of the dislike button being absent for them. Right now, for me, the dislike button sits right next to the like button under a video. Moving it to a submenu would make it considerably more of an effort to access, meaning that fewer people would likely use it. It’s unclear how widely this apparent test may be rolled out, and Google didn’t

More than four in 10 UK teenagers want more work experience opportunities at school, with a similar proportion calling for more guidance on how to apply for jobs, a survey for the BBC suggests. The online survey, by Survation , external , asked 2,000 young people aged 13 to 18 about the world of work and the help they need to secure employment once they leave full-time education. As part of the Teen Summit project by Radio 5 Live and BBC Bitesize, we followed four students from Newcastle - Param, McKenzie, Jasmine and Javaris - as they tried out roles for the first time as part of their work experience placements.

I’m really interested in seeing how this turns out. Multi-year federal grants in the US almost always have to be re-applied for every year, and are almost never guaranteed past 1 year (and are subject to budget cuts). I see where they’re coming from with the longer term goals. It will be interesting to see what comes out of it.

Ann Altman’s lawsuit against her brother was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it can’t be refiled. On Tuesday, US District Judge Zachary Bluestone dismissed the lawsuit Ann Altman filed last year alleging that her brother, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, had sexually abused her throughout her childhood. As reported earlier by The Guardian , the judge wrote that over the past year, Ann had failed to appear for an independent medical examination or meet other deadlines despite warnings that it would result in the case being dismissed. When the case was filed last year, a statement shared by Sam Altman, his mother, and his brothers said, “Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about

A £3.6bn proposal to stop sewage being discharged into Windermere, England's largest lake, has been unveiled. The plans, which are backed by the local water company United Utilities and clean water campaigners, would see a tunnel up to 12 miles (19km) long built to transport sewage away from the lake. At the moment both raw sewage and treated effluent are discharged into Windermere and campaigners say that is why parts of the lake have been turning green each summer, so-called algal blooming. It is now up to the government to decide if the plan can be further developed, and if the £3.6bn price-tag is acceptable. The Lake District is a Unesco World Heritage site and attracts close to 18m

Hello all. I work on a small team and I’ve been tasked with taking on the bulk of code review for when my senior goes on leave. Although I’ve read a fair bit of code (man am I lucky I learned to code before AI “got good”) I can’t say I’ve done a lot of actual “review”. Does anyone have any tips? I feel responsible if anything breaks after I review it so of course I want to avoid that. Always phrase things in a positive way. No matter how good or thorough your review is, phrasing issues in a positive way and pointing out good things will make discussion about the code so much easier, and also obviously make the human interaction at work nicer. Also there may be novice people or people who

French state places officers as agents of authority tasked with repressing, rather than managing, public dissent Familiar images of teargas clouds drifting across Paris squares, police baton charges against masked protesters and terrified teenagers floored – and worse – by stun grenades have once again focused the world’s attention on France’s policing methods. While most of its western European neighbours generally favour police tactics that prioritise crowd containment and de-escalation, France has long responded to social movements that take to the streets with at times shocking physical force. The reasons why are a complex mix of history, politics, state organisation and a particular

The private keys of eight eMudhra intermediate CA certificates have been compromised. They chain to roots trusted by the Mozilla, Microsoft, Apple and Chrome root programs and by many downstream trust stores. To demonstrate that the keys are compromised, the original reporter Wayne signed the following message with the private key of each of the eight intermediate CAs and reported it to the Root Program Teams on the 17th of October: proof.zip contains the message, and for each intermediate the certificate, its public key and a signature on the message. To verify with OpenSSL: The root programs and many downstream trust stores have taken action to protect their users. The certificates have

Dr. Vanessa Kerry has been named the special envoy for health resilience at the World Health Organization. Joel Saget/AFP via Getty Images hide caption Resilience is one of those buzzy buzzwords. But what does it mean, exactly? Bouncing back from tragedy? Conquering obstacles? Having the inner strength to follow a dream when the odds are against you? For Dr. Vanessa Kerry, the definition is pretty straightforward. It boils down to being prepared. In the world of global health, she says, that means "strong systems, primary care and the ability to respond." Those are the ideas that will guide her in her new job as special envoy for health resilience at the World Health Organization. It's the

I previously arranged (by PMing everyone who mentioned it) a 5 Lobster meetup in Mexico. I'll be in NYC next week and think this could be nice. There will be cross contamination from Array Language people. We can target e.g. 5:30PM until ???, perhaps by Bryant Park or Borough Hall. (I don't know the general city well, mostly commuting to friends near Myrtle or in Manhattan on quick trips, but these seem like generally accessibly locations). As a first pass, I suggest Maman Cafe, but hope someone recommends something better. PM me for my contact information if you want, or to hang out at another time. :) Sounds like a good time. Maman is nice, I’ve also heard good things about Breads Bakery

US Special envoy Steve Witkoff hugged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before the Oslo talks began US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Volodymyr Zelensky are meeting in Oslo, with relations on the slide between the Ukrainian leader and US President Donald Trump. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said Zelensky had asked Oslo and neighbouring Finland to organise the talks with the US and European allies "at a critical time for Ukraine". US Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier rejected as "scandalous" accusations that Ukrainians were dying because the US was withholding intelligence from Kyiv. He was speaking after Zelensky's top military adviser Serhii Beskrestnov told the BBC

Unless you live under a rock with a bag on your head and your fingers in your ears (which kind of sounds heavenly at this point, if I'm being honest), you've probably seen or heard of the Rocco smart fridge, a retro-looking wine cooler/minifridge that keeps a catalog of its contents, so you can know what's inside no matter where you are. Former WIRED contributor Andrew Watman reviewed it for us in 2024 , giving it a solid 7 out of 10 and confirming that it is every bit the statement piece it’s designed to be. I own one as well, and I love both its vintage-inspired charm and that I can “see” what's inside without having to look in it. The Rocco’s marquee feature, other than it coming in fun

People vote at a polling location at the Metro Headquarters Building during California's state primary election in Los Angeles, California, on June 2, 2026. Frederic J. Brown/AFP via Getty Images hide caption The Department of Justice is demanding California take the unprecedented step of segregating ballots associated with 20,000 people the department says are "likely" noncitizens. But an initial review by local officials suggests the list is "unreliable" and that some people on it had indicated in records they were born in the U.S. and therefore may be citizens. The new details come from court filings submitted Tuesday by the state of California and local officials, in response to a

Your support helps make our show possible and unlocks access to our sponsor-free feed. What if an AI bubble bursts, triggering a recession, and that recession ends up accelerating the replacement of workers with AI? Call it the AI double whammy. I've long been skeptical of sweeping claims about how AI will transform the world. I still am. We don't really know. But as this technology advances, I've found myself worrying more about what it could mean for our livelihoods. Two strands of economic research have given me reason to take this double whammy seriously. One concerns the history of financial bubbles. The other concerns a surprising relationship between recessions and automation, when

The midterms will be a referendum on the GOP’s alignment with tech overlords over the public they’re meant to serve “The world should accept some bad things happening,” Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, said recently, “for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency.” Like so many things tech oligarchs say, it’s incoherent, since Altman would like to deny the world and the people in it the agency to decide whether or not we should accept his bad things. Surveys show that most Americans would like to pause AI ; opposition to AI datacenters is a factor in many races in the midterm elections. I’ve been a fan of the film Terminator 2 forever, the one where a badass female
