I have done my fair share of tinkering. Poking around in servers and fixing things ; iterating through and trying different settings until it finally worked ; not to mention clicking around in various cloud portals, only to realise I have no idea how I ended up with the deployment I now have in front of me… “At least it works”, some might say and be content, but not me. What if I need to do this again? About a year ago, I wrote a post on the topic of automation , talking about how: The primary reason to automate something is not to save time, it is to codify knowledge and ensure reproducibility. In this post, I want to expand on the idea of what can be codified by talking about GitOps .

Two people killed and at least 17 injured as Russia and Ukraine continue to trade strikes on power infrastructure Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday thanked the Trump administration for resuming intelligence sharing between the two countries, but maintained the US had intentionally throttled its Starlink satellite internet access so that Donald Trump could send a “message” in his ongoing feud with the Ukrainian president. In an interview on NBC, Zelenskyy said the US had “unblocked” intelligence on impending Russian ballistic missile strikes, which have pounded the country’s energy infrastructure as winter draws in. “It was blocked for some period of time. And then it was deblocked by the

SPD officer Amber Harpe was fired for sharing her Flock access with her ICE agent husband. Now, former Savannah police officer Amber Harpe was fired in August following a department investigation that found she had shared her Flock login information with her husband, Tyler Harpe, an ICE agent. SPD does not share its Flock data with ICE and said sharing access to the system violated the department’s security protocols. While he had unauthorized access to the system, Tyler Harpe conducted 983 searches related to 97 license plates, which were overwhelmingly registered to Hispanic drivers, according to Savannah’s local ABC affiliate, WJCL . The Harpes defended their actions, saying they didn’t

President Emmanuel Macron urged calm in his national address following widespread looting and violence France's Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is holding a crisis cabinet meeting on Monday to assess a weekend of violence and looting across the country, in what were some of the worst scenes of public disorder in modern French history. On Saturday over half a million mainly peaceful protesters demonstrated against rising living costs and dwindling access to decent public services, including a good state education. But the protests turned nasty after groups of black-clad, masked activists and vandals appeared. An estimated 1,500 shops and businesses were looted and destroyed. Riot police

Artificial intelligence (AI) giant Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares to a fund that will make donations for the "public good". The announcement comes as Anthropic lays the ground for a potential blockbuster stock market listing that could value the firm at more than $1tn (£750bn). The AI industry has come under intense scrutiny recently over safety concerns and fears about its impact on society and the economy. Anthropic reportedly said in its initial public offering (IPO) filing that AI could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity". Anthropic said its proposed fund could support nonprofit organisations, and efforts to address AI's impact on the jobs market. None

Carolyn Marvin was charged with ‘disorderly conduct’ for protesting delivery robots taking jobs. Carolyn Marvin was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after blocking the path of an Uber delivery robot and refusing to get out of the way. Marvin told Philadelphia’s ABC13 “I know they’re taking the jobs of human delivery workers and so, I have been protesting them whenever I saw them by standing in front of them and preventing them from going forward.” Police responded to the scene and asked Marvin to move out of the robot’s way. When she refused, they placed her in cuffs and arrested her. The incident was captured on video and has now garnered considerable media attention. The

In a social media post ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, Trump calls Netanyahu a ‘Strong, Brave, and Brilliant’ leader. United States President Donald Trump has issued an endorsement of Israel’s incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing a close race in parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump praised the Israeli leader for being an ally of the US in its war on Iran. He added that he was giving his “Complete and Total Endorsement” to Netanyahu. The US president’s backing comes nine days before the Israeli election — and after speculation that it might not come at all. Trump had refused to endorse Netanyahu earlier this

Dame Rachel de Souza's landmark report examines the challenges faced by children across England Services for children are in a "state of emergency" and young people across England are facing extreme and unfair inequality, a new report says. Children's Commissioner for England Dame Rachel de Souza has analysed a hundred different metrics including health and social care, education, safety and play, concluding that a "postcode lottery" has resulted in a "litany of failures" affecting children. Her report, called the Childhood Lottery, found that deprivation alone could not explain the differences in their experiences. Some poorer areas had scored highly in her analysis compared to relatively

People who study how to convince people are more trusted than people trained to talk in technical jargon about specific fields. Shocker there. People are emotionally driven. Everyone is, to an extent. Scientists are less likely to use that to support their point, or they’ll have emotionally displeasing things to say. Eh… shitty people exist outside of the United States. We just happen to be very loud about it. Take, for example, the British. They’re huge assholes, too. Have been for centuries. And everyone hated them the most long before we Americans came along. And, of course, it makes total sense that our country is one of their offspring, so to speak. Funny how the Canadians turned out

The St Petersburg Oil Terminal was among targets hit in the city overnight At least one person has been killed in an overnight attack on St Petersburg that successfully targeted two of the city's oil facilities. The region's Governor Alexander Beglov said fires were being extinguished at the St Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Ruchyi oil depot following the attack, which also injured at least five. A logistics centre belonging to Ozon - known as Russia's Amazon - and a data centre belonging to Facebook equivalent VKontakte were also hit. Kyiv has not yet commented on the strikes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday morning that Russia had targeted his country's energy

The players sometimes change. I sat down with four of Benchmark’s partners three years ago , and three of those individuals are no longer with the firm. The capital commitments have changed, too. This summer, Benchmark announced $2 billion across two funds, marking only the second time in its 31-year history that it has veered from raising a far smaller vehicle. But at this week’s TechCrunch Disrupt, the venture firm’s five partners convincingly portrayed a close-knit team that’s not about to put the pedal to the metal, even as many of their rivals do exactly that. The world may be speeding up, but they’re investing at the pace Benchmark always has: just two or three new bets per year per

Bill to authorise production expansion at Mount Pleasant coalmine, subject to a landmark high court decision, criticised as ‘legislative overreach’ The Minns government says it will introduce special legislation to allow a mine in the New South Wales Hunter Valley that was the subject of high court proceedings to increase its coal production by 32% per year. The premier, Chris Minns , said the bill would authorise MACH Energy to increase the annual coal output at its Mount Pleasant coalmine by 4m tonnes to 16.5MT per year until 2032. He claimed it was necessary to save 400 jobs at the site before Christmas. The move comes less than two weeks after the high court ruled that the approval of

Wikipedia’s 68m articles have been consulted trillions of times. Not bad for a website that has barely changed since it was founded 20 years ago A few years ago, I was struck by the tension between how Wikipedia was used, and how it was talked about. Everyone was on it all the time, and yet its reputation had stalled at “don’t trust it”, because it was the “free encyclopedia that anyone can edit”. Clearly people were trusting it, so much so it had become part of the fabric of everyday life since it was founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger in 2001. But despite the fact it now has been consulted trillions of times by billions of people (English Wikipedia alone is 5.2bn words long), it

My mother died in a car accident yesterday. To my great regret, I had constantly been putting off seeing her for years, and it leaves me deeply stricken that not only did she die with nobody at her side, but that she had spent years alone, with nobody keeping her company as she became isolated in older age. While delivering the news, my father told me his doctor had given him two years to live, ten months ago. I don't want to repeat the same mistake. I want to spend the next year with him, fulfilling his dream of a cross-country road trip, something which he gave up on to raise me as a single father. However, I cannot afford to do this. I did odd jobs here and there, but the kind of

The outside watchdog can publish its findings without Anthropic’s approval. Anthropic has granted external evaluators “employee-like access” to assess the risks of its models, following through on a commitment to increase safeguards over concerns the technology could run catastrophically out of control. METR, a nonprofit that has worked with leading labs including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta, now has a team embedded in the Claude maker’s office with access to its hardware and internal systems. A greater role for third-party evaluators is among the main concrete steps the labs have proposed in response to rising concern about the dangers more capable AI systems could pose to the

Police say no further action will be taken against the wife of the government's national security adviser after she posted on social media referencing Palestine Action. Sarah Helm, who is married to Jonathan Powell, wrote on X on Thursday: "God help us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action." She was responding to a discussion about the author Sally Rooney, whose novels will not be supplied to booksellers in the UK following her announcement that she intends to use her royalties to support the proscribed organisation. On Saturday, the Metropolitan Police said Helm's post was "assessed by specialist officers and it was determined that it did not meet the criminal threshold". On

There are gifts for men. And then there are manly men gifts. Countless gift guides for the men in your life offer up the same neckties and tool sets and tasteful leather belts. And don't get us wrong: We're classy people, too. We like only the finest T-shirt a Savile Row tailor recommends , and anything themed for whiskey. But this is a guide to the manliest gifts made for man men, menly objects ranging from the most classic of man totems to the most ridiculously hypermasculinized . Welcome to the red-hot tropics of the manosphere. Mere regular soap will not do when soap with the word “men” on it also exists . No mere shaving for us, when shaving can be aggressive . Enjoy. After chatbot startup Character.AI filed for bankruptcy earlier this week, many of its employees will have the opportunity to take jobs at Disney. Character.AI’s former CEO Karandeep Anand recently became the entertainment giant’s first CTO , and the startup previously said that Disney had agreed to acquire some of its assets for $20 million. A legal filing spotted by Bloomberg revealed more details about the agreement between Character.AI and Disney, with Disney agreeing to make employment offers to at least 60 Character.AI employees — the majority of the workforce — paying them an estimated $60 million in annual compensation. The filing also says that the “vast majority” of Character.AI
