The opensource subreddit’s new rules against AI have sparked a revolt. The mods at r/opensource posted new submission rules that, among other things, banned projects that use AI. The post made Saturday evening opens by saying, “If your project uses AI, is made by AI, or is intended for AI, it’s not welcome on r/opensource. AI, as it exists today, is incongruent to this Open Source community.” The new rules have set off a firestorm in the comments, and even spurred the creation of a rival sub r/trueopensource . Moderator Wolvereness has waded into the comments to explain that there’s nuance and room for selective enforcement, such as “software that incidentally has accessibility features

But I haven't seen much development in this space. Are there any notable models optimized for this task or full/semi-autonomous coding has taken over? help xscott 3 hours ago | next [–] I'm craving something similar, but a smidge more than tab-completion. I'd like to treat the agent as an ephemeral pair programmer. Give the editor some

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has returned home to a fraught political landscape after over 10 months in exile. Her ally, former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, confirmed the news minutes later, writing: "I am thrilled to announce to you that our leader, my dear María Corina, is on Venezuelan soil." In January, a month after Machado left Venezuela to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway, the US seized her opponent, President Nicolás Maduro. The Trump administration then backed his deputy, Delcy Rodríguez, as leader, and she was sworn in as interim president, later signing an oil deal with the US. This breaking news story is being updated and more

Robbie’s storylines in the famous soap will be recut into vertical micro-episodes to be watched on phones – but her fellow cast members say they haven’t been consulted T he long-running Australian soap opera Neighbours is being recut with AI into a microdrama designed to be watched on phones, sparking a debate among the show’s actors and the industry over the wider implications of television archives being mined for new content. RoseBerry Media, which specialises in making “vertical television” for phones, has repurposed original episodes of Neighbours for distribution on its Epis platform, using an AI-assisted production tool called RedSnapper. The microdrama made from the footage will

A few weeks ago, I merged in a pull request to update the Chromium Flatpak to use runtime version 21.08. I had given it some testing without running into any issues, plus the binary-compiled Chromium variants like Chrome, Brave, and Edge were all already on runtime 21.08, thus it seemed like an easy merge. What could go wrong? Then, the next morning, I woke up to see a PR filed to revert the change , due to a newly filed issue detailing that the update broke video playback , with some errors about the "audio renderer". First off, I tried it out myself and confirmed that YouTube was completely broken. This didn’t show up in testing because I almost never use YouTube on desktop, preferring

Michael Carrick was named permanent Manchester United manager in May after a successful interim spell Michael Carrick's future as Manchester United manager is under major threat following the home loss to Bournemouth on Sunday. The Red Devils lost 3-0 as their poor start to the season continued - they have won just one of their eight Premier League matches so far and sit 16th - 14 points off the top. Carrick, 45, took interim charge in January following Ruben Amorim's departure and he was rewarded with the permanent job in May after securing Champions League qualification with an impressive run that resulted in them finishing third. But United have not won in the top flight since 30 August,

Since early this year, Michael Malis (of pgrust ) has been showing me interesting things he's done and saying There is, understandably, a lot of skepticism about projects like pgrust because there are so many low-quality AI-generated projects out there. If I didn't know Malis and didn't look into it, I would just assume that pgrust was another vibe slopped project that's never going to work. This isn't to say that pgrust is bug free 3 , but it does indicate that there's a substantial amount of testing happening and, even if pgrust itself is never successful, just making the attempt will have improved Postgres in a durable way. That being said, I find it understandable that, every time I see

Each bubble is an S&P 500 company, its area proportional to its market capitalization as of , grouped by sector. Inside it, one stick figure stands for employees, so a bubble crowded with small figures is worth little per worker and a big bubble with a handful of figures is worth a lot. Every figure is the same size, so how densely a bubble is filled shows its employees per dollar of market cap. Only companies with at least employees and a market cap of at least are shown ( of the S&P 500), plus a few big companies with fewer employees, such as Palantir and Welltower, drawn as one half-size figure. Employee counts are full-time staff from each company's latest annual report, so they lag up

Nearly 1,000 arrests were made as hundreds of thousands of people took part in another day of protests across France which were followed by some clashes late on Saturday, officials have said. After a day of largely peaceful demonstrations, police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters in a number of cities including Paris, while barricades were set alight in Marseille and people ripped boards from a shop in Bordeaux. But officials have so far managed to avoid rioting and looting on the scale seen last weekend, which resulted in some of the worst scenes of disorder in France's modern history. The interior ministry said an estimated 410,000 people protested on Saturday, while

How much filter is too much filter for kids and teens posting selfies on social media? That is the question state attorneys general across the country are grappling with following a landmark settlement with Meta this summer. As part of the agreement, the social media giant agreed to block some digital beauty filters for minors — specifically those mimicking extreme transformations like cosmetic procedures or heavy makeup. Now, the burden falls on state officials to tell Meta where to draw the line. But defining where harmless fun ends and harmful manipulation begins is far from straightforward. For teenagers navigating the digital landscape, the pressure of online perfection is a daily

Batteries. They're not typically thought of as a significant source of innovation. Most companies have spent the last few years removing mice in favor of more lightweight designs. That's what's made the return of the replaceable and rechargeable battery surprising—something I once thought to be a lost technology from a bygone era. A few companies have recently realized that the ability to pop out and replace your battery in seconds is a great way to extend mouse life without needing to increase battery size or efficiency. From the handful of mice I’ve tested with hot-swappable batteries so far, Wallhack does it best. The mouse is designed around the function’s ease-of-use, and everything

Instagram is continuing its expansion into living rooms with Instagram for TV, for Apple TV . The company first started testing a version of the platform focused on Reels, live streams, and other video content, blown up for a bigger screen in December of last year. Then, in June, it launched a slew of new features for the app, which is available for Amazon’s Fire TV, Samsung Smart TVs, and Google TV. Now Meta is bringing the app to Apple TV, though there’s been little fanfare. MacRumors spotted an updated Instagram app in the App Store that added Apple TV to its list of compatible platforms on October 23rd. Archived versions of the app page from as recently as October 18th listed only the
