I recently started writing C again for the first time since 2018, and handling errors has been an especially difficult adjustment coming from languages like Go and Zig that coddle me with their wonderful defer and errdefer . Then I read some emails from John Carmack on inlined code that gave me an epiphany on writing cleaner error handling code, and now I want to share it with the world. I write Go all day at my dayjob, and error handling is pretty trivial. When there’s an error we wrap it and bubble it up, and let some top dog up the call stack figure out what they want to do with it. If there is resource cleanup involved, it’s made easy with defer : Sometimes there’s more complicated

Sony has a collection of colorful, translucent cosmetics for its PlayStation consoles and controllers. Announced Wednesday, the Prism collection brings three new, gorgeous color options that conjure a nostalgic, transparent tech feel. They come in Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray. (Based on the pictures, the gray looks more like a blue to me.) You can get Sony’s DualSense PlayStation 5 controllers in the Prism design or opt for PS5 console covers. On the controllers, translucent plastic wraps around almost the entire device’s frame, letting you view the components inside. On the console cover version, the transparency is more limited—you can see only the fan and a few other

The OBR report says RHDI (real household disposable income – one measure of living standards) is rising at a record slow rate – less than 0.1% per decade. That means, by the end of the decade, it will be just 1% higher than its pre-Covid level, it says. double quotation mark Our central forecast represents a continuation of the historically weak growth in RHDI per person since the global financial crisis. Chart 2.7 shows the rolling 10-year average annual growth in RHDI per person. This slowed significantly in the aftermath of the financial crisis, due to lower growth in productivity and real wages. Growth reached a historic low over the 10 years to 2025-26, averaging just ¼ per cent a

submitted by technocrit to science 28 points | 2 comments https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-03446-9 In recent weeks, some of Brazil’s leading scientific organizations, including the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in Rio de Janeiro, circulated an open letter endorsing Lula, a leftist former labour leader. It received more than 20,000 signatures. “It’s hard to express just how happy the scientific community and the Brazilian society is with Lula’s victory,” says Paulo Artaxo, a physicist at the University of São Paulo. Many worried that, if Bolsonaro were elected, he might slash support for Brazilian science and undermine it in the way that his father, Jair Bolsonaro, did. Jair was

It’s time to see how Apple rethinks the Mac for touch support, years after criticizing touchscreen laptops. Apple has already had a busy week. On Monday, it announced a new iPad Mini with an upgraded OLED display , and on Tuesday, we got M6 chip upgrades for the MacBook Pro and iMac . The Macs are the definition of iterative updates — they’re quiet refreshes that look just like their direct predecessors. But today should be a whole lot more interesting. At an event in Los Angeles, Apple is expected to debut a revamped MacBook Pro with a touchscreen display . This would be the first touchscreen on a Mac (not counting the beleaguered Touch Bar ). Touchscreen laptops are something Apple

Meta later changed its policies to remove language indicating that it
