The justice department has threatened California over alleged noncitizen voters. In a letter addressed to the California secretary of state, Shirley Weber, on Tuesday, the acting deputy attorney general, Trent McCotter, said the justice department gave Los Angeles county officials a “password-protected thumb drive” with names of people that the federal government “believes are likely noncitzens”, Reuters first reported. The letter, which gives state officials 48 hours to review the list, demands California withhold mail-in ballots from the listed people until their citizenship is confirmed, adding that ballots mailed back should be “segregated” and that those already returned should not be

Rising gasoline and diesel prices pushed inflation higher in September. The cost of living index was up 3.7%, according to a report Wednesday from the Labor Department. Isabelle Souriment/Hans Lucas/AFP via Getty Images hide caption A report from the Labor Department on Wednesday showed consumer prices in September were up 3.7% from a year ago. That's a larger annual increase than the previous month. A spike in energy prices tied to the U.S. war with Iran drove the cost of living higher. Prices jumped 0.6% between August and September. "It's not looking good," said economist Brian Bethune of Boston College. "The main problem, of course, that everybody knows is gasoline prices. But also

Kyiv’s forces experience connectivity problems on Elon Musk’s satellite network. Given that LLMs were a fancy autocomplete back in 2024, and now people are talking about building "software factories" with the agents, what in your mind is the stop to this development? Why software architecture would be hard for agents still in a year or two? Just thinking because I see more and more examples of

Unforeseen a year ago , Democrats' now have a real chance at taking the majority in the U.S. Senate. (Gamblers in some betting markets now see it as likely , even.) What are the potential paths for Democrats to take over the Senate — or for Republicans to block them and hold on? The current Senate has 53 Republican members. The Democratic caucus is made up of 47 Senators, or 45 Democrats and two independents (Sens. Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont). Democrats need to pick up a net of four Senate seats in order to gain a majority of 51 seats. Republican Vice President JD Vance would break a 50/50 tie, so Democrats need 51 seats minimum. President Donald Trump said Tuesday

The Iosevka’s monospace family is provided in a slender outfit by default: glyphs are exactly 1/2em wide . Compared to the competitors, you could fit more columns within the same screen width. Iosevka provides two widths, Normal and Extended . If you prefer more breeze between the character, choose Extended and enjoy. Terminal emulators have a stricter compatibility requirements for fonts. Therefore, Iosevka and Iosevka Slab all contain two specialized families, Term and Fixed , targeting terminal users. In these families, the symbols will be narrower to follow terminals’ ideology of column count. In the Fixed families, the ligation will be disabled to ensure better compatibility in certain

Hi everyone, we are excited to share t0-gamma, the latest model in our t0 family. It is a 256M parameter open-weights foundation model for time series (TSFM). It runs on CPU, GPU or Apple chips. https://huggingface.co/theforecastingcompany/t0-gamma t0 leverages historical data to forecast the likely outcomes over a given horizon. It does so zero-shot. It works on almost any time series, as it can pick up small signals like trends and seasonality. It can also leverage future-known information, like holidays, promotions and weather forecasts. Under the hood, t0 is a transformer that alternates attention between time and across the variates of a series. t0 is agnostic to the domain and to the

The former employee took more than 100 confidential files before leaving to join Apple, OpenAI alleges. OpenAI claims a former employee took more than 100 files related to its product plans before joining Apple. In a document filed on Wednesday , OpenAI accuses the unnamed employee of sending this information to a personal account and then presenting it to Apple leadership, including the vice president of the company’s operations in Asia. The filing, reported earlier by Reuters , is tied to a legal battle between Apple and OpenAI over trade secrets — but this time, OpenAI is doing the accusing. It alleges that the files in question contain images of at least one unreleased device, along

Meet Prismm , a startup that helps banks keep families’ money in-house after an account holder dies. It does this by building beneficiary and estate planning into accounts from day one, which makes the transfer of assets to heirs less complicated. Prismm is presenting its mission today on the Startup Battlefield stage at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 . Prismm was founded in 2020 by sisters Martha Underwood and Shella Sylla, who each have decades of experience in banking and finance. The pair came up with the idea for Prismm based on their own experience of seeing firsthand how difficult it can be to manage a family’s affairs in an emergency. Their father was hospitalized in 2017 after he fell
