Two cargo ships have sunk, one ship was afire, and sailors are dead or missing. Drones sank two cargo ships and damaged a third in the exclusive economic zones of NATO member countries for the first time, killing at least two sailors. The attacks represent a notable escalation as Black Sea commercial shipping has increasingly come under attack during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Russia also being accused of carrying out “hybrid warfare” incidents across Europe. The Togo-flagged cargo ship Alfa Watan sank, and the Palau-flagged cargo ship Able was set ablaze after being attacked by multiple sea and aerial drones about 80 miles (128 kilometers) off the coast of Bulgaria on October 6,

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Isaias formed early Wednesday in the warm waters off eastern Mexico and forecasters said it was expected to strengthen into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season before hitting the U.S. Gulf Coast later in the week. Isaias was centered about 285 miles (460 kilometers) west of Progreso, Mexico, and about 580 miles (935 kilometers) southwest of the Mississippi River's mouth, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph) and was moving east-northeast at 8 mph (13 kph). It was not immediately known where the storm may make landfall on the Gulf Coast. The hurricane center's initial projections said the

Well, here’s my feature on spruceOS and where the project is heading with their 4.5.0 update. Rather than just running through a changelog, I wanted to get into why spruce has grown the way it has: the push toward that “one card to rule them all” idea, making the same SD card useful across more handhelds, the work behind dArkMoss/BaseOS, offline RetroAchievements, and how the project has expanded without losing the hobbyist spirit that made it interesting in the first place. To put it together I interviewed all four members of the spruce team: SundownerSport, Ry, Arkun and Chris, all about their own parts of the project, how they work together, and what 4.5.0 represents for spruce going

submitted by nark3d to programming 23 points | 21 comments A comment is worth leaving. I’ve come round to thinking there isn’t one that explains what the code does. If you need a sentence to say what a block is for, the block is telling the wrong story. Rename the function. The comment disappears because nothing needed explaining. People hear when I say this that I want no comments at all. A comment that explains why, or cites the paper the algorithm came from, or records the incident that made this branch exist, is doing work the code cannot do. That kind of note belongs next to the module and ages fine. The one I want gone is the running narration, the line above the loop that says what

Delivery apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats have changed how diners eat and how restaurants operate. AI could force a new kind of reckoning for the industry. DoorDash, the leading food delivery app, processed 970 million orders in its second quarter this year and generated $4.5 billion in revenue. A 10-person startup called Bites is a blip in comparison: It has just around 300 restaurants signed up in the Bay Area, where it’s operating as a pre-seed startup. But this summer, Bites caught DoorDash’s attention. In August, a slew of restaurants in the Bay Area received a strange email from DoorDash, warning businesses that they may be listed without their consent on Bites. The form letter,

Suit says AI tool allows independently owned franchises to exchange nonpublic price and sales information McDonald’s is facing a lawsuit in federal court over its alleged use of an AI tool to determine pricing across independent franchises, which prosecutors say violates antitrust laws and has unfairly inflated menu prices for Americans. The vast majority of McDonald’s US stores are independently owned and are said to individually decide on prices under company policy. Antitrust laws require businesses to set prices independently from their competitors, as coordinating prices can stifle market competition and push up costs for consumers. The lawsuit, filed on 2 October in a federal Chicago

Microsoft is heading to San Francisco this morning to reveal what’s coming next for Windows and Surface and a “conversation on how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC.” That conversation will include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Windows and Surface chief Pavan Davuluri. I’m expecting to hear a lot more about Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform and Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra that uses Nvidia’s new Arm-based chips. Microsoft’s keynote will start at 10AM PT / 1PM ET on Wednesday October 7th. The full presentation should run for around an hour. You can watch it live on YouTube , but the best way to follow along is through our live blog.

In software development, we collect anti-patterns to recognize common traits that lead to poor outcomes in our software. I thought it would be helpful to do the same for software blogging, so I’ve catalogued the most frequent mistakes I see from beginner bloggers. The most common mistake in software blogging, by far, is meandering. I constantly find myself several paragraphs into a post with no idea what the author is trying to tell me. Developers love specificity, so they start blog posts with backstory, historical context, and whatever else happens to be on their minds. That may be fun to write, but it’s not always interesting to read. From the reader’s perspective,

When The Social Network hit theaters in 2010, it was fair to wonder if the film had come too soon . Facebook had been launched from Mark Zuckerberg ’s Harvard dorm room just six years earlier, and nobody really knew how it would reshape digital community in the decade to come. But, with a breakneck screenplay by Aaron Sorkin, a menacingly propulsive soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and a surgical performance from Jesse Eisenberg as Young Zuck, director David Fincher delivered a slick corporate thriller about the major drama to that point: intersecting lawsuits over who owned what percentage of the platform and who could lay claim as a founder. Flash forward 16 years, and

Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7? | Hacker News Hacker News new | past | comments | ask | show | jobs | submit login Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7? 24 points by mariocesar 14 hours ago | hide | past | favorite | 19 comments DHH's "AI shed" idea got me thinking about getting a small $5–10/month VPS. I'm a Linux guy and have on many points of my life have a personal server. So I like the idea of having something always on, but I’m not sure the maintenance is worth it when most things can just run on my laptop. That said, I tend to do things myself and only later realize I could have automated or delegated them, so I
