There are just weeks to go until the US midterm elections that will decide control of Congress, with campaigning in full swing around the country and voters weighing who to back at the ballot box. The elections will have a potentially major impact on the remainder of President Donald Trump's time in office. He is facing challenging political headwinds with concerns over rising costs and the war in Iran high on the minds of voters. Ahead of the elections, the BBC's Sarah Smith travelled across Iowa to speak to voters in the predominately Republican state. Produced by Cai Pigliucci, filmed by John Landy and edited by Blanca Estrada

Online pornography depicting strangulation or incestuous relationships will be banned from early November, the government has announced. From 6 November, it will be illegal to possess or publish porn which shows strangulation or suffocation, depicts sexual activity between people who are related or shows adults role-playing as children under 16. The new rules follow a review into porn regulation in 2025 which found depictions of choking were "rife" on popular porn sites and had helped normalise the act among young people. Conservative peer Baroness Gabby Bertin, who headed the review, said the news came "not a moment too soon". She told the Press Association the change in law would "send

ZURICH (AP) — Gianni Infantino apologized to FIFA's ruling council on Thursday for "mistakes" in his secretive investment plan for the World Cup but didn't give details sought by his toughest critics who want to oust him as the president of soccer's governing body. Soccer officials came to the meeting in Zurich hoping to receive more information about two of the biggest controversies that have surrounded Infantino this year: his now-aborted $4.2 billion World Cup sell-off plan and the Folarin Balogun red-card case at the World Cup where President Donald Trump intervened. READ MORE: Infantino abandoned his World Cup equity plan after seismic FIFA backlash. Here's what to know Despite

Tesla just revealed its redesigned second-generation Roadster with SpaceX thrusters, a vehicle CEO Elon Musk has called “the best of the last of the human-driven cars.” Musk showed off the car at an event outside Waco, Texas, with a demonstration that saw the car use a mixture of high-powered fans and thrusters to drive up an inverted ramp, spin around, and ease itself to a landing on the pavement below. The car also used the thrusters to lift itself over a Cybercab, Cybertruck, Tesla Semi, Model Y, and Model 3 while in motion. “This will be the actual car that’s on the roads,” Musk said of the car, which Tesla showed accelerating 0 to 60 miles per hour in one second. “It literally is just

SK Hynix appears to be navigating choppy U.S.-China chipmaking waters. The company’s flash memory unit, Solidigm, is seeking U.S. approval to send American chipmaking equipment to its factory in Dalian, China, as a condition to continue building a semiconductor factory in the U.S, Reuters reported , citing anonymous sources. Solidigm has been reportedly chalking up plans to build a NAND flash memory chip factory in the U.S., and is considering upstate New York as a potential location for the facility. NAND flash chips are primarily used in solid-state storage drives, which are employed in everything from laptops and smartphones to AI data centers. But the global component shortage thanks to

“It definitely makes you wonder truly who is the real monster in the situation.” Director Yûta Shimotsu is describing events in a new episode of live-action J-horror anthology show Strange: Junji Ito's Tales for Sleepless Nights , but he could be referring to almost any episode. The award-winning manga artist of the title, whose macabre short works are adapted into disturbing 30-minute bites, has a way of blurring lines between protagonist and antagonist amid his surreal nightmares. Tales for Sleepless Nights aired its 12-episode first season on TV Tokyo this summer, and now HBO Max is bringing those eerie frights to US audiences. The first two installments “Lovesickness (Part 1 of 3)” and

This law affects everyone, especially people in the EU and is an attempt to implement ID verification on: Video-sharing platforms, #AI chatbots, AI companions, games, software app stores and operating systems. https://mastodon.social/@madeindex/117285674482286098 The EU’s planned KIDS Act is causing unrest in the Fediverse, the network of independent servers around Mastodon. Critics warn of age verification on every single server and foresee the end of decentralized social networks. It may be very damaging for the Fediverse, but even if the EU outright banned all ActivityPub servers, that wouldn’t force an end to the Fediverse. The Fediverse does not end at the external borders of the EU.

KDE celebrates 30 years with a new Plasma release, a farewell to X11, and a movie. Marking the 30th anniversary of software developer KDE on October 14, the company released Plasma 6.8, debuted a movie, and retired Plasma’s native X11 session support. The announcement from KDE dubs the new Plasma 6.8 as the “30th Anniversary Edition” and describes the update as preparing Plasma for the future. Legacy X11 applications will still function via the XWayland compatibility layer , and KDE applications will also continue supporting X11 under other desktop environments. After 42 years in service, the X11 protocol is losing another major desktop environment. Plasma will fully adopt the Wayland

In the 1980’s, there were no freely available C compilers (I guess Borland was inexpensive, but not free). The GNU C Compiler was the first such. The project focused on being bootstrappable, reproducibility from source with a fixed dependency chain. Corporates took advantage of GCC, and continue to, but have also been happy that LLVM came along with its permissive licensing. LLVM was a free lunch for GPU deployment, letting corporates customize it to compile shaders without having to release the sources. In the LLM era of mostly closed weights, closed and pirated datasets and inaccessible compute requirements, what would, or does, an open alternative look like? Or should something else be

Interested to hear about experiences with 'yield farming' as well - another term I have not heard in the
