Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Enrique Hernández bats during the fifth inning in Game 4 of baseball's National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026, in Atlanta. Colin Hubbard/AP hide caption This week, an ethical question, of all things, intruded into the baseball playoffs. Tuesday night, Dodgers versus Braves, in Atlanta. A young man in a Dodger jersey caught a foul ball in the stands. As so often happens these days, someone seated nearby captured it on video, and then felt compelled to instruct the man, "Give it to the kid! Give it to the kid!" And indeed there was a small boy, maybe preschool-aged, a few rows back in a Braves jersey. But the

Marathon’s greatest competitor, Eliud Kipchoge, has sent a message to the next generation declaring that he’s not done yet. The 41-year-old Kenyan revelled in his Melbourne Marathon debut on Sunday, breaking the race record and delighting thousands of fans at the MCG finish. Beating the old race mark by two seconds, his two hours nine minutes and 10 seconds over a new course gave Kipchoge his first marathon win in three years. Jimmy Whelan, a former Australian professional cyclist, was with the two-time Olympic champion and former world record-holder until about 30km. Then Kipchoge went up a gear and dominated to the finish. Looking as though he has just done a training run, Kipchoge then

Lego isn't going anywhere. Those beloved little bricks won't biodegrade , are machined to incredibly tight tolerances, and—unless your dog chews one up—retain what Lego refers to as their “clutch power” for decades. Their relevance in terms of cultural pastiche isn’t fading on me either. They're as irresistible to me today as they were as a kid. If you and your loved ones are also obsessed with Lego sets, we have some great gift ideas. For more recommendations, don't forget to check out our other gift guides . Ok, well at least they put the comma in the right place. But I definitely read that wrong the first time anyway. “The rate at which the star is feeding from the brown dwarf suggests that this slow stellar cannibalism could carry on for hundreds of thousands, or even billions of years.” I wonder why they called it cannibalism A brown dwarf is an astronomical object that is larger than a planet but not massive enough to sustain hydrogen fusion like a star, typically having a mass between 13 and 80 times that of Jupiter. They are often referred to as “failed stars” because they can fuse deuterium but cannot maintain stable hydrogen fusion. Very interesting read on wikipedia:

Several people have been injured in another attack on an international airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh, reports say, days after Yemen's Houthis claimed to have carried out strikes on the hub. More than a dozen ambulances were seen rushing to the airport, according to Reuters, citing an eyewitness. Saudi authorities have not commented, while the airport told passengers to check with their airline before travelling there. The US embassy said it was "aware of attacks on King Khalid International Airport" and urged American citizens to avoid the

Newly established commission identifies 17 catastrophic threats to human health but says ‘realistic route to act’ on each exists Humans could become extinct by the year 2100 due to malicious use of AI or nuclear conflict, according to a new global risk assessment. They top a list of 17 major threats to human health over the next 75 years, which also includes cuts to aid spending by wealthy countries, the climate crisis and childhood malnutrition. The experts behind The Lancet Commission on 21st Century Global Threats to Health said all the threats interact, meaning they must be addressed together – but stressed that there was “a realistic route to act” on each. “Decisions made by leaders

George Williamson says ‘national resilience’ is key focus of ATI amid US and China’s runaway leadership in field The UK must not become dependent on foreign AI systems that can be switched off at short notice and must develop its own versions of the technology, according to the head of the Alan Turing Institute. The country needs a stronger domestic position in AI in response to the US and China’s runaway leadership in the field, with “national resilience” a key focus for ATI said George Williamson. The institute is the UK’s leading AI research body and is under new leadership after the government, its main source of funding, demanded a strategic shift. “As AI becomes more embedded in

The majority of the papers on Sunday are dominated by the death of a man in Yorkshire after he was attacked by a tiger. The Daily Star declares "Tiger attack horror", and says the unnamed man was killed on Saturday after he climbed into a big cat enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Similarly, the headline on the front page of the Sunday People reads: "Killed in tiger horror". The Sunday edition of the Mirror has spoken to several witnesses to the attack, one told the paper that "the keepers did everything they could". It reports that both staff and visitors to the zoo "desperately tried to distract the big cat", but police said the man died at the scene. The front page of the Sunday Times

Even as AI supercharges digital scamming and cybercrime, it’s also being recruited in the fight to protect potential victims. Governments around the world have consistently struggled to address the global crisis of online crime, grappling with the limitations of attempting to crack down on criminals beyond their borders . This has inspired alternative efforts, like using automation to attempt to go after scammers en masse—perhaps by spamming the spammers to squander their resources. For the last two years, the Australian company Apate, named after the Greek goddess of deception, has been building a system that diverts phone scammers onto calls with AI bots that are trained to keep

It is a common pattern for developers to assume that consistency is something they can achieve inside a single component. Apache Kafka is the cautionary tale. Making writes exactly-once took a team of distributed systems engineers years and several new components and a complete rewrite of older components ( Gustafson et al. 2016 ). 1 And after all of that, the people who built it are blunt about what you get: Exactly-once processing is an end-to-end guarantee and the application has to be designed to not violate the property as well.( Narkhede and Wang 2017 ) If the component cannot promise the property, the promise has to live somewhere else. Two practical consequences: Someone has to

A spy implant in some Ledger crypto wallets may be the root of an $86 million supply chain attack. Reports have been mounting that users of the Ledger crypto wallet have seen their accounts drained , and suspicion is that it’s related to reseller CryptoBillis and a bit of spy hardware. Ledger has asked CryptoBillis to pause all sales of its wallets while it conducts an investigation. Photos and videos posted on X and Threads appear to show a small circuit board sandwiched under the screen. The implant allegedly intercepts anything displayed on the screen, including the seed passphrase shown during the initial setup. Using an embedded SIM card, the implant then sends that information back to

In a lengthy post on X , Microsoft’s CEO laid out his views on the dangers posed by highly advanced AI models and how to confront those risks. Nadella says we can no longer accept a world where AI is treated as a “set of nested black boxes” whose advice and actions we simply accept or reject. He calls for building a more transparent system where models can be contained, observed, and leaves behind “tamper-proof human readable evidence.” Many of his recommendations align with what we’ve heard from others in the industry: timely incident disclosure, independent audits, verifiable data, and containment. It’s on that last point that he appears to go slightly farther than some others in the

Modern visions for the future of human-computer interaction are excessively focused on smart glasses and headsets - devices that are constraining & socially awkward. This project explores an alternative direction - a speculative device called the Lightbulb Computer that uses modern projector technology & computer vision advancements to blend ambient computation & spatial information display in everyday spaces. In this series of design prototypes, I want to share with you a direction for computing that involves projecting information in the real world to augment it, rather than keeping it confined to small rectangular screens, or worse - piping it through devices that live on our faces.
