Basically everything seems to be falling apart or getting worse over time. I don’t want to blame AI on all of it because I really just think that the increased adoption of AI is bringing out the worst in people. Impatience, greed, laziness seem to be the traits I pick up in people I interact with online and in person more than

Brian Stack was shot in the back of the neck as he left a boxing match in 1983 The family of a senior Irish prison officer murdered by the IRA has received a state apology on Wednesday for failings in investigations into his killing. Brian Stack, a father of three, was crossing a street in Dublin, after leaving a boxing match in 1983, when he was shot in the back of the neck. Stack, who was the chief prison officer at the high-security Portlaoise Prison, was left paralysed and died 18 months later, aged 49. There were three separate garda (Irish police) investigations into Stack's death, but no-one was brought to justice for his killing.

International health experts have called the trial “unethical,” but anti-vaccine Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has attempted to fund it with US taxpayer dollars. Under Kennedy, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in December that it had awarded the Danish researchers—led by married couple Peter Aaby and Christine Stabell Benn of

Today we’re publishing patching-bugs and regression-hunt , two plugins that let engineers delegate patch development and regression checks to agents. Our patching-bugs plugin reproduces reported bugs, develops fixes, and tests them. The regression-hunt plugin checks whether any changes break previously working and supported behavior. Engineers can direct the work and review their results; maintainers can supply their own security assumptions and patching requirements, so the agents work within the project’s rules. We built patching-bugs and regression-hunt through Patch the Planet , our joint initiative with OpenAI, where we’ve co-authored hundreds of security patches for widely used

The latest talks between Putin (right) and Witkoff lasted about three hours in St Petersburg Russia is "ready in principle" to resume talks with the US and Ukraine on ending the conflict, Vladimir Putin's top aide has said. Yuri Ushakov was speaking after Putin met US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff in the Russian city of St Petersburg. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and its European allies have been pressing Moscow for an immediate resumption of the talks suspended in February, and Ushakov said a new round could be held next month, possibly in Abu Dhabi. Russia has for months refused talks as it believes it is winning on the battlefield with Ukraine facing an

Zia Yusuf claims undercover investigation broke the law as broadcaster stands by its journalism Here is an explainer by Jill Ambrose about the Jackdaw decision. But environmental groups have condemned the decision. Ami McCarthy, head of politics for Greenpeace UK , said: Approving Jackdaw shows the toxic grip fossil fuel lobbyists still hold over our energy policy. Andy Burnham promised pragmatism [see 8.40am ] , but there is nothing pragmatic about rubber-stamping a project that won’t lower energy bills, won’t boost energy security and will create just 27 full-time jobs … True pragmatism means severing our reliance on expensive oil and gas that leaves British households broke, supercharges

After introducing its Gemini AI assistant to Android Auto last year , Google is now bringing it to Apple CarPlay users. The conversational Gemini in navigation is available today for US drivers, with “rollout happening globally too,” according to Google (we’ve asked for specific regional availability details). It’s taken almost 12 months for Google to bring this to CarPlay users, but now they can talk to the voice assistant in Google Maps to get some hands-free help while driving. That includes asking it multi-step questions, such as recommendations on places to visit and then prompting it to direct you there while avoiding toll roads. Users can activate the feature by tapping the Gemini

Hi there. I was engineer number 3 at Eventbrite and founding engineer at Reforge. I've created a dozen or so startups myself and have worked in many others, like Instacart. All this time, no one knew that I was a convicted felon. It wasn't exactly a topic that came up, but it was certainly something that I never brought up. When you're a convicted felon, people look at you as if you are tainted. I was unable to rent apartments in San Francisco. I was unable to get a job directly after being released from prison. It's funny because when you owe the state $17,000 in restitution and you can't get a job, people become extremely desperate. And that desperation can easily put you right back into

Last month, advertising company Infillion acquired location-data platform Foursquare, a once popular social network, at an undisclosed value. Now, in a new blog post , Foursquare co-founder and former CEO Dennis Crowley said that investors didn’t see any returns from the sale. Crowley referenced a post by an angel investor , inferred that neither preferred nor common stockholders got any value out of the deal, and said he was disappointed by the outcome. “I was heartbroken by this ending. So many people put so much time and energy and passion and love into building Foursquare — the company, the products, the brand, the culture. If you were part of it (or even close to it), you know exactly

For the past few days I’ve been testing an impressive open-weight AI coding model called Flint. It suggests that fully recursive self-improvement , or RSI—an exciting and controversial approach that uses AI to build AI—is getting closer. Flint is the first offering from Recursive, a company that aims to use RSI to advance both AI itself and other areas of science using AI . “Nearly every aspect of the entire model pipeline was actually done and improved upon by AI,” Recursive CEO and cofounder Richard Socher told me. Socher says his company used its recursive AI system, dubbed the Eureka Machine, to automate most elements of the model’s development. This enabled a company with a handful of
