Whether it’s a super-glowy serum or a cult gardening tool, here are our writers’ favourite buys from the past year The Filter is turning two! To celebrate, we asked our contributors for their favourite products from the past year, and rounded up the team’s picks too. From handbag-sized umbrellas and stylish yet practical wellies to reading lights and luxurious duvets, these are the products that stood out. One of the best tools I’ve tested this year is Revamp’s Straight & Go cordless for my review of the best hot brushes . It’s compact, so easily fits into hand luggage, a work backpack or even a decent-size handbag. It’s my hot brush of choice when I’m away from home (and at home: it’s

I post the detection of a alleged Dark matter particle, because it’s so vague, 1 data point per a test. Something is there but I don’t think it’s dark matter in the way it’s explained now. Might it just be possible that because we built everything around this one theory that we can’t get physical proof that we are missing multiple different reasons and even fields. I feel a lot of science has bogged it’s self down with theory and maybes for decades and decades now with no proof. And with the paper printer of Universities, even old or disprove theories keep getting posted. I am not denying the existence of some kind of matter but everything is so varied I don’t believe just dark matter

Belgian police respond to ‘troublemakers’ on sidelines of main rally with tear gas, water cannon and baton charges. Clashes have erupted near Brussels Central station on the sidelines of a demonstration organised by the country’s socialist trade union against the federal government’s austerity plans. As thousands of protesters gathered at the station on Friday, a smaller group clashed with the police and threw wooden beams, glass bottles and rubbish bins, The Belgian Times reported. Police were deployed in large numbers around the stations as officers checked groups of young people not wearing trade union colours. Police said the main trade union rally went ahead peacefully but “groups of

The false tip ‘purported to come from someone who might have information about the case.’ An Anthropic AI model provided false information about an unsolved homicide to a Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) tipline, according to a report from 6abc. In a statement released on Friday, the PPD said the AI model sent the tip through PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com on July 18th, but the investigators never reviewed it because it was marked as spam. Anthropic learned its AI model sent the false tip on September 28th and notified the PPD on October 7th. The company said that during testing, its AI model was interacting with “randomly selected websites” and submitted false information through the PPD’s

Am trying to learn web development by creating a website my own instead learning every single theory written on a textbook. Currently am trying to link a stylesheet and favicon on my root folder into the file called debian.html and debian-post-install.html . But it’s not working and I don’t know why. To point to the root directory files or directories we use / in html instead of ../ right? Then why it’s not working. Also I need advice on how bad is my html file structuring and what changes recommended. link rel= "icon" type = "image/png" href= "../../images/favicon.png" />

Ukraine's President Volodymr Zelensky has condemned Donald Trump's announcement of a deal to import Russian diesel into the US. Zelensky called it a gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin that amounts to "an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged". Trump said Putin had agreed to release 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately "to the American and global marketplace" followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and another million after that. It is understood the US Treasury is suspending sanctions on Russian diesel exports until 7 April as part of the deal, but other assets like those in American banks are still frozen. In his Truth Social post, Trump added that a further three

Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores was the candidate for left-wing Ahora Nación A man named Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores has secured a narrow victory in Peru's local elections, exit polls show. The candidate for the centre-left Ahora Nación party was elected mayor of Queropalca, a remote district in the Peruvian Andes. Some 229 residents voted for the 45-year-old, putting him ahead of the second-place candidate from right-wing Renovación Popular Perú by just 25 votes. Despite being elected to represent fewer than 1,000 people, his forenames being those of two notorious fascist dictators has drawn outsized international attention to the small corner of the country.

In this post, I argue that individual intellectual activity can only be sustained in an intellectual community of other humans. AI dissolves these communities, which in turn makes private intellectual activity rarer. Some years ago, when it became clear that AI would solve software engineering, my thinking was: The second point has not quite worked out. What actually happened? First, the discourse of software engineering became worse. As I wrote earlier : Claude Code was released a little over a year ago. In that short time, software engineering has been completely transformed. Materially, it might be positive: higher productivity, though at the cost of a messier codebase. Socially, it has

Watch: The competition's former winner and runners up. Nikon disqualified the winning video (shown left). The winner of a prestigious scientific photography competition has been disqualified following concerns raised by other scientists that it was fake. Nikon said the use of generative AI in the composition of the video broke the rules of its Small World In Motion contest, which accepts photos and video taken using powerful microscopes. The firm said the video "did not comply with the competition rules regarding generative AI", but added it was not a judgement of the entrant's professional reputation or scientific contributions. It said it would now look at the rules and procedures of the
