Reality: it is an active, involuntary vasomotor response. The nervous system constricts blood vessels under the skin to form ridges—acting like tire treads to channel away water and improve grip on wet objects. Patients with severed median nerves don’t wrinkle at all. AI slop, source links also incorrect. This is a waste of everyone’s time. Because i got curious: Water immersion skin wrinkling is an indicator of limb sympathetic function. Routine clinical usage of this enigmatic phenomenon is hampered by poor endpoint quantification, which involves counting skin folds. The recent discovery of the importance of vasoconstriction in immersion wrinkling suggests digital blood flow or volume

The AI boom is pitting local residents against corporate giants seeking to power their energy-hungry networks – but one Welsh city is fighting back D ale Johnston opens the gate to his neat suburban garden on the western fringes of Newport in South Wales . There’s a trampoline and a slide on the lawn for his grandchildren, and chairs for him and his wife. He should be enjoying the light draining from the perfect autumnal sky – but almost his entire view is blotted out by a vast expanse of prefabricated panels. The 23 metre-high grey hulk looming over him and his neighbours is a hyperscale datacentre. It is heralded by the area’s Labour politicians as a job creator, yet all Johnston can

The UK says it will establish a national AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) to help strengthen its defences against emerging biological threats. As part of Wednesday's Budget, the government will commit £100m to establishing the new, "world first" institute with the support of leading AI firms. The chancellor will also pledge millions of pounds in spending across a range of initiatives aimed at shoring up the UK's ability to respond to evolving cyber, biological and AI-enabled threats. "AI will transform daily life: every firm, community, hospital, school, and every aspect of our economy can benefit," John Healey said. "I understand and share the concerns of working people, so I am setting out a

People have also begun marching in the port city of Marseille, France’s second-most populous city. Thousands had gathered for the procession down the Canabière main street. In Lyon, crowds have set off from Place Jean-Macé, chanting slogans and singing, flanked by rows of police officers. Crowds are also marching in Toulouse and Lille . Meanwhile protest restrictions remain in place in other cities, where last-minute legal appeals have failed. In Bordeaux , demonstrators have shown up at the Place de la Bourse despite a city-wide ban and tram cancellations. “Whether the protest is banned or not, we will support the high school students’ movement and we won’t abandon them. We are parents, we

Nearly 1,800 developers from the Ruby on Rails community across 80 countries shared their thoughts on the tools, frameworks, and workflows that shape their daily development lives. This year, we also asked about something that's on everyone's mind: AI. How teams are using it, how they feel about it, and whether it's actually changing the way they work. This is the ninth edition of our survey since 2009. For nearly two decades, it has been one of the key ways our team at Planet Argon keeps a pulse on how this community has evolved. Some of these questions date back to our very first survey, allowing us to track trends over time. Others are new additions, designed to reflect what's changed in

You have got to listen to these conversations with Block’s new Dessa AI model. Jack Dorsey’s Block announced an AI model called Dessa that’s trained “from scratch on nothing but human conversation,” and to show off the model, Block shared chats it has had with humans that can occasionally be a little awkward and uncanny. Take this one , for example, shared by Dessa lead Ragavan Thurairatnam. The conversation between the model and the speaker does have a mostly natural back and forth (though for some reason, the model initially mistakes the speaker for somebody named “Ronaldo”). The Dessa website features a few other examples, like a back-and-forth about Christopher Nolan’s films (including

New details of IV team’s attempts to find a vein shared by Pike’s lawyer ‘shocked and disturbed’ practitioners Medical experts have expressed shock at the apparent incompetence shown by Tennessee’s execution team during the failed lethal injection of Christa Pike, the prisoner who survived a normally fatal dose of pentobarbital, which they say would be considered medical malpractice in any other setting. New details emerged on Thursday of how Tennessee’s intravenous (IV) team struggled for almost an hour to set up a line into Pike’s arms through which she would be administered the fatal dose of sedative. A blow-by-blow account was released in legal proceedings from Pike’s lawyer, Randy
