The fifth plenum comes against a backdrop of years of purges that have had some analysts wondering if the issue is corruption or a lack of loyalty When Xi Jinping came to power in 2012, he pledged to stamp out corruption all through the ranks of the Communist party. More than a decade later, the pace of investigations has not slowed. Last year, China’s disciplinary authorities opened investigations into more than 1 million people, including more than 100 officials at or above ministerial or provincial level. As Chinese Communist party (CCP) officials prepare for an important meeting this week discipline – and party loyalty – is high on the agenda. For those who try to read the tea leaves of

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has returned home to a fraught political landscape after over 10 months in exile. Her ally, former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, confirmed the news minutes later, writing: "I am thrilled to announce to you that our leader, my dear María Corina, is on Venezuelan soil." In January, a month after Machado left Venezuela to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway, the US seized her opponent, President Nicolás Maduro. The Trump administration then backed his deputy, Delcy Rodríguez, as leader, and she was sworn in as interim president, later signing an oil deal with the US. This breaking news story is being updated and more

Each bubble is an S&P 500 company, its area proportional to its market capitalization as of , grouped by sector. Inside it, one stick figure stands for employees, so a bubble crowded with small figures is worth little per worker and a big bubble with a handful of figures is worth a lot. Every figure is the same size, so how densely a bubble is filled shows its employees per dollar of market cap. Only companies with at least employees and a market cap of at least are shown ( of the S&P 500), plus a few big companies with fewer employees, such as Palantir and Welltower, drawn as one half-size figure. Employee counts are full-time staff from each company's latest annual report, so they lag up

Antimatter is not known for being easy to get ahold of . That’s part of why these particles remain so cryptic. But recently, a team of physicists at Northwestern University managed to trap a single antimatter particle for months. Cooling it to temperatures near absolute zero, they could control its quantum states with great precision without even touching it. The experiment, published in Physical Review Letters , represents a breakthrough in our understanding of one of the great mysteries of physics. In theory, antimatter should be everywhere . Mathematics predicts that every particle of matter has an equivalent antiparticle, a fact that scientists have verified experimentally. The universe

Michael Carrick was named permanent Manchester United manager in May after a successful interim spell Michael Carrick's future as Manchester United manager is under major threat following the home loss to Bournemouth on Sunday. The Red Devils lost 3-0 as their poor start to the season continued - they have won just one of their eight Premier League matches so far and sit 16th - 14 points off the top. Carrick, 45, took interim charge in January following Ruben Amorim's departure and he was rewarded with the permanent job in May after securing Champions League qualification with an impressive run that resulted in them finishing third. But United have not won in the top flight since 30 August,

Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts millions of free books each month to children around the world. “When I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister. Who knows, maybe there is a little girl whose dream is to be a writer and singer. The seeds of these dreams are often found in books and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world.” In 1995, Dolly

Two men have been killed by falling trees on Sunday as Storm Boelo continues to bring severe weather to the UK. A man in his 20s was pronounced dead in north London after the car he was driving was hit by a falling tree. It came hours after a 60-year-old man died in Dumfries and Galloway. The harsh weather battering the UK had left more than 90,000 properties without power as of 19:00 GMT on Sunday, the Energy Networks Association (ENA) said. Those still without electricity have faced delays as the dangerous conditions were "limiting network engineers' opportunities to safely start the work", the ENA added. Roads across Scotland have been flooded, including part of the A82 at Dumbuck Quarry

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — President Donald Trump intensified his anti-Muslim rhetoric against Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Sunday, portraying him as a threat to national security and questioning his loyalty to the United States in remarks that drew a sharp rebuke from a former top Arab American ally. Trump called El-Sayed, a former Detroit health official, a "jihadist" who was "on the side of the terrorists" and would "have to go through a metal detector before he's allowed to go into the Senate." He also repeatedly invoked the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, drawing a comparison between stopping El-Sayed from entering the Senate chamber and the passengers who fought back

RoseBerry Media, which specialises in making “vertical television” for phones, has repurposed original episodes of Neighbours for distribution on its Epis platform, using an AI-assisted production tool called RedSnapper. The microdrama made from the footage will

The Archdiocese of New York and attorneys for about 1,300 parishioners who said they were sexually abused by clergy have agreed to an $800 million settlement of their legal claims, the second-largest involving a Catholic archdiocese in the U.S. Archbishop Ronald Hicks sent an email Saturday to clergy confirming the settlement after attorneys for the survivors of alleged abuse announced it. Hicks said the agreement will not be final until the parties sign it, an action scheduled for the week of Nov. 6. Australia is (has?) pulling all research scientists off Macquarie Island due to worries about the potential stress of thousands of seals dying en-mass: But once it arrives, up to 90 percent of baby elephant seals could perish, as happened on Heard Island over summer, when 13,000 pups died from bird flu.

Publishers spent years figuring out how to get clicks on Google. But new AI search features have torn that ecosystem apart. The digital publishing industry has relied on Google for a very long time. Many outlets spent time and money optimizing their webpages to show up at the top of the search engine, with the goal of getting readers to click on their articles or discover their websites for the first time. For years, the relationship between Google and publishers was largely reciprocal; online publishers filled out Google’s search index with content, while Google supplied publications with exposure and traffic. But that relationship has changed. The launch of Google’s AI search features —

How much filter is too much filter for kids and teens posting selfies on social media? That is the question state attorneys general across the country are grappling with following a landmark settlement with Meta this summer. As part of the agreement, the social media giant agreed to block some digital beauty filters for minors — specifically those mimicking extreme transformations like cosmetic procedures or heavy makeup. Now, the burden falls on state officials to tell Meta where to draw the line. But defining where harmless fun ends and harmful manipulation begins is far from straightforward. For teenagers navigating the digital landscape, the pressure of online perfection is a daily

I got bored and wanted to make a parser of C expressions. this will probably become a compiler at some point. previously, I’ve made a calculator using shunting yard , but with an itch to perhaps make a compiler of some kind, I looked at pratt parsing . you won’t find much information about pratt parsing in a conventional learning path of computer science. the dragon book , for all it talks about parsing, doesn’t mention it. as far as I’m aware, most programming language courses will probably teach either LR or recursive descent depending on how academic it is. pratt parsing specifically appears to be relegated mostly to compiler development and PLT circles. the shunting yard algorithm is,

I've been trying to enroll for Apple Developer for over a month and nothing works. The Apple Developer app won't accept my Canadian passport for identity verification. The enrollment is for a Delaware LLC, so my Apple account region is set to US. I can't switch the account region to Canada either, because I haven't lived there in years and don't have a Canadian bank card. If I enroll through the website, the enrollment gets approved, I accept the term and, when it's time to pay, all my cards get declined. I tried ~7 bank cards (debit, credit, personal, business), all with matching billing addresses. All US cards. All the banks tell me they didn't decline transactions from Apple. I tried no

Until a few years ago many of us may have been blissfully unaware of what a data centre was. These giant, warehouse-like buildings power virtually all our internet activity, from our web searches and emails to movie downloads and online banking. They are at the heart of the AI boom, housing the advanced computer chips and servers needed to run services like ChatGPT and Claude. But the speed at which they're growing, the enormous amount of electricity they consume and concerns about their environmental impact are fuelling a public backlash around the world. In the US, they've become a huge issue ahead of the midterm elections on 3 November, with both Republicans and opposition Democrats

Batteries. They're not typically thought of as a significant source of innovation. Most companies have spent the last few years removing mice in favor of more lightweight designs. That's what's made the return of the replaceable and rechargeable battery surprising—something I once thought to be a lost technology from a bygone era. A few companies have recently realized that the ability to pop out and replace your battery in seconds is a great way to extend mouse life without needing to increase battery size or efficiency. From the handful of mice I’ve tested with hot-swappable batteries so far, Wallhack does it best. The mouse is designed around the function’s ease-of-use, and everything

Instagram is continuing its expansion into living rooms with Instagram for TV, for Apple TV . The company first started testing a version of the platform focused on Reels, live streams, and other video content, blown up for a bigger screen in December of last year. Then, in June, it launched a slew of new features for the app, which is available for Amazon’s Fire TV, Samsung Smart TVs, and Google TV. Now Meta is bringing the app to Apple TV, though there’s been little fanfare. MacRumors spotted an updated Instagram app in the App Store that added Apple TV to its list of compatible platforms on October 23rd. Archived versions of the app page from as recently as October 18th listed only the
