For the past few days I’ve been testing an impressive open-weight AI coding model called Flint. It suggests that fully recursive self-improvement , or RSI—an exciting and controversial approach that uses AI to build AI—is getting closer. Flint is the first offering from Recursive, a company that aims to use RSI to advance both AI itself and other areas of science using AI . “Nearly every aspect of the entire model pipeline was actually done and improved upon by AI,” Recursive CEO and cofounder Richard Socher told me. Socher says his company used its recursive AI system, dubbed the Eureka Machine, to automate most elements of the model’s development. This enabled a company with a handful of

"Purchase to sit" signs are popping up in Starbucks stores around China Taking a seat at a Starbucks in China? Just make sure you're also ordering something there. A new policy by Starbucks China takes effect across all its 8,000 stores on Thursday, making it mandatory for people to purchase items if they want to sit in its cafes. Starbucks China said the move was part of efforts to improve the "in-store experience" for customers. The company is facing stiff competition from homegrown brands such as Luckin Coffee. Reports of the new policy circulated this week, along with social media videos of what appear to be "purchase to sit" signs in Starbucks stores.

For the past few months, I've been building a product "Linden". Its a low latency deterministic layer for ai agents. Linden helps businesses verify AI-generated outputs before they lead to real-world actions. It evaluates AI outputs against expected schemas, trusted data, and business rules to determine whether an action should be allowed, flagged, regenerated, blocked, or sent for human review. Linden helps businesses ensure their AI agents don't just produce convincing answers — they make decisions that align with actual business requirements, verified information, and configured limits. I have tried cold email outreach that didn't work. Published a professional demo across multiple

Earlier today, the PHP project released PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, and 8.2.35. These releases fix two critical vulnerabilities that, under the right conditions, allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute code on servers running PHP. If you run PHP, it is imperative that you update now. The announcement on php.net contains and references technical details on the vulnerabilities, attack vectors, and instructions on how to update on which systems. This post isn't about how to update. It's about how these vulnerabilities were found and fixed, what has changed in how PHP security is handled over the past two years, and what we need from the organizations that depend on PHP to keep PHP's

Brian Stack was shot in the back of the neck as he left a boxing match in 1983 The family of a senior Irish prison officer murdered by the IRA has received a state apology on Wednesday for failings in investigations into his killing. Brian Stack, a father of three, was crossing a street in Dublin, after leaving a boxing match in 1983, when he was shot in the back of the neck. Stack, who was the chief prison officer at the high-security Portlaoise Prison, was left paralysed and died 18 months later, aged 49. There were three separate garda (Irish police) investigations into Stack's death, but no-one was brought to justice for his killing.

Tesla said Wednesday it will start selling its Cybercab to customers by the end of the year, even as federal regulators investigate whether the vehicle meets vehicle safety standards . The gold-hued, autonomous two-seater lacks a steering wheel and other traditional controls. During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, Lars Moravy, vice president of engineering at Tesla, said the Cybercabs produced today are all destined for the company’s own robotaxi fleet. As that fleet grows, the company will “mainly deliver fully designed autonomous vehicles to our customers,” he said, noting that it will start small. The company will scale as it learns about delivery, ownership, and fleet

Zia Yusuf claims undercover investigation broke the law as broadcaster stands by its journalism Here is an explainer by Jill Ambrose about the Jackdaw decision. But environmental groups have condemned the decision. Ami McCarthy, head of politics for Greenpeace UK , said: Approving Jackdaw shows the toxic grip fossil fuel lobbyists still hold over our energy policy. Andy Burnham promised pragmatism [see 8.40am ] , but there is nothing pragmatic about rubber-stamping a project that won’t lower energy bills, won’t boost energy security and will create just 27 full-time jobs … True pragmatism means severing our reliance on expensive oil and gas that leaves British households broke, supercharges

The latest talks between Putin (right) and Witkoff lasted about three hours in St Petersburg Russia is "ready in principle" to resume talks with the US and Ukraine on ending the conflict, Vladimir Putin's top aide has said. Yuri Ushakov was speaking after Putin met US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff in the Russian city of St Petersburg. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and its European allies have been pressing Moscow for an immediate resumption of the talks suspended in February, and Ushakov said a new round could be held next month, possibly in Abu Dhabi. Russia has for months refused talks as it believes it is winning on the battlefield with Ukraine facing an

All Bloffy adds to a reader's page is one small 3.2KB script. You decide whether to run ads, which analytics to use, and which domain to publish on. Plain text carries no semantics. Block editors make semantics hard to express. Bloffy is designed so that Markdown, HTML, CSS and JavaScript let you express exactly the semantics you intend. Buttons and dropdowns alone can't give you precise control. Customize your blog precisely, with CSS. A blog can have several members, and you can run several blogs. All of it lives inside a workspace. Writing and administering a blog are separate permissions.

YouTube creators, on their own videos, will have the dislike button moved behind the three-dot menu, but that’s not the case for regular users. On Tuesday, I published a story about how YouTube appeared to be testing hiding the dislike button on videos, with at least two users on X sharing screenshots of the dislike button moved into the three-dot menu. But a YouTube spokesperson, in a Wednesday statement to The Verge , confirmed that YouTube is “not testing hiding the dislike button on YouTube for users.” However, YouTube is introducing a new UI for creators on their uploaded videos where the dislike button will be moved. We are not testing hiding the dislike button on YouTube for users.

The UK government says it is working to actively identify and patch any potential exposure in its online services, after vulnerabilities were identified in the PHP programming language that underpins a significant number of the world's websites. Governments and some of the world's biggest companies, including Amazon, were scrambling to protect their systems on Thursday before hackers could exploit them. The flaws were first discovered by AI, after which governments and agencies urged websites to address them. Amazon was targeted in multiple attempts, which it said occurred before an embargo on the warning was lifted. It added that it was unclear how actors knew about the vulnerabilities. A

Nix flakes are an experimental feature of the Nix package-management tool designed to build projects in a more self-contained and reproducible way. Despite the feature's experimental status, it has become increasingly popular for open-source projects to publish flake.nix files that offer predefined development environments and build automation even when those repositories may not offer an upstream package or module for the NixOS Linux distribution . The promise of flakes is to provide reliable and reproducible methods for acquiring and building software. Let's say that an open-source project is trying to provide Linux users with an easy way to set up a development environment for its

New research out of Texas shows how data centers are driving up pollution. A rush of new data centers could bring air pollution roaring back to levels not seen since the 2000s in Texas, which has become ground zero for the physical infrastructure behind generative AI. New and proposed data centers are demanding a tremendous amount of electricity. How developers and utilities meet that demand — with gas turbines or renewable energy — will determine just how dirty things will get. So far, though, things are looking grim. Tech companies and data center developers are devising new ways to get enough electricity, including building out their own power sources. But if all planned data center

Last month, advertising company Infillion acquired location-data platform Foursquare, a once popular social network, at an undisclosed value. Now, in a new blog post , Foursquare co-founder and former CEO Dennis Crowley said that investors didn’t see any returns from the sale. Crowley referenced a post by an angel investor , inferred that neither preferred nor common stockholders got any value out of the deal, and said he was disappointed by the outcome. “I was heartbroken by this ending. So many people put so much time and energy and passion and love into building Foursquare — the company, the products, the brand, the culture. If you were part of it (or even close to it), you know exactly

Ex-FCC chairs say Brendan Carr aims to scare broadcasters into self-censorship. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr today warned broadcasters about airing “fake polls,” amplifying one of the many complaints that President Trump has regularly made about the news media. Carr’s post on X said, “Many journalists and broadcasters have been amplifying or airing these Polls without regard to basic journalistic ethics and without informing the public that those Polls lack a scientific, accurate, or even real basis… Broadcasters are advised to avoid engaging in News Distortions or running Broadcast Hoaxes by airing Polls that would violate their regulatory obligations.” Carr
