This google.com visit uses DNS, establishes a secure connection, sends an HTTP request, then renders the response. The browser knows google.com as a name, not the network address it needs to contact. It asks a resolver, which looks up that name through DNS; the IP address comes back to the resolver, then to the browser. Here, we’re assuming there’s no usable cached answer, though caching can shorten this path. The IP address identifies the endpoint the browser will contact. The browser sends SYN, the edge replies with SYN ACK, and the browser finishes with ACK. This three-way handshake establishes TCP state and confirms both sides can communicate. TCP can then provide ordered, reliable

Rising gasoline and diesel prices pushed inflation higher in September. The cost of living index was up 3.7%, according to a report Wednesday from the Labor Department. Isabelle Souriment/Hans Lucas/AFP via Getty Images hide caption A report from the Labor Department on Wednesday showed consumer prices in September were up 3.7% from a year ago. That's a larger annual increase than the previous month. A spike in energy prices tied to the U.S. war with Iran drove the cost of living higher. Prices jumped 0.6% between August and September. "It's not looking good," said economist Brian Bethune of Boston College. "The main problem, of course, that everybody knows is gasoline prices. But also

Some entry-level McKinsey candidates will have a 10-minute conversation with a simulated client as part of the interview process. Consulting firm McKinsey & Company is going to ask some entry-level candidates to have a 10-minute conversation with an AI simulation of a client as part of the interview process, according to The Wall Street Journal . The AI simulation “aims to reflect 80% of the scenarios McKinsey consultants might encounter in their day-to-day work,” the WSJ says, and it isn’t designed to “mimic an unhinged client.” The AI won’t score the candidates — humans will be in the room to assess the candidates and see how well they deal with the simulated situations. The justice department has threatened California over alleged noncitizen voters. In a letter addressed to the California secretary of state, Shirley Weber, on Tuesday, the acting deputy attorney general, Trent McCotter, said the justice department gave Los Angeles county officials a “password-protected thumb drive” with names of people that the federal government “believes are likely noncitzens”, Reuters first reported. The letter, which gives state officials 48 hours to review the list, demands California withhold mail-in ballots from the listed people until their citizenship is confirmed, adding that ballots mailed back should be “segregated” and that those already returned should not be

Unforeseen a year ago , Democrats' now have a real chance at taking the majority in the U.S. Senate. (Gamblers in some betting markets now see it as likely , even.) What are the potential paths for Democrats to take over the Senate — or for Republicans to block them and hold on? The current Senate has 53 Republican members. The Democratic caucus is made up of 47 Senators, or 45 Democrats and two independents (Sens. Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont). Democrats need to pick up a net of four Senate seats in order to gain a majority of 51 seats. Republican Vice President JD Vance would break a 50/50 tie, so Democrats need 51 seats minimum. President Donald Trump said Tuesday

I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in my mouth in May 2026. Here are some things I learned based on that experience so far. Note, since this is on the front page of Hacker News right now. exhilaration suggested that if you are within a 2-3 hour drive of a major cancer center, go there instead of your local community hospital. Use the US News cancer hospital rankings . The top centers usually take your insurance, so use vacation days and book a hotel if you have to. The largest benefit I saw was speed.

If Apple’s first smart display finally gets my family to actually use my smart home, I’ll consider it a win. I’m just going to come right out and say it. I love the approach Apple has taken with the HomeView . I think it’s the shared, always-available household interface that my family might finally use. Is Apple’s first smart display my dream smart home dashboard? No. But is it the right product for Apple Home at this moment? Absolutely. A lot of initial reactions to the $299 HomeView (which looks like a giant Apple Watch on a flatter metallic HomePod Mini) ask why you would want it when you can do most of what it offers on your iPhone or iPad . And yes, its features replicate many of the

At least 16 additional protesters have been arrested after clashing with riot police. Protesters started a blaze at Albania’s Education Ministry overnight after a second day of student protests in the country’s capital Tirana that continue unabated. Demonstrators broke in overnight on Tuesday and lit a fire inside of the building, according to police, adding that the violence resulted in 16 arrests. Protesters continued to rally on Wednesday. Hundreds of students gathered and slung rocks at the ministry, as they demanded better university conditions and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. In an attempt to break up the crowds, riot police responded with tear gas and water cannons.

It’s really important we reintroduce it, because we need to raise the level of support and resourcing for aged care. I was the aged care minister before being the communications minister, we need to work urgently. There’s not enough beds being built for older Australians who need that support. It’s recalibrating

Meet Prismm , a startup that helps banks keep families’ money in-house after an account holder dies. It does this by building beneficiary and estate planning into accounts from day one, which makes the transfer of assets to heirs less complicated. Prismm is presenting its mission today on the Startup Battlefield stage at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 . Prismm was founded in 2020 by sisters Martha Underwood and Shella Sylla, who each have decades of experience in banking and finance. The pair came up with the idea for Prismm based on their own experience of seeing firsthand how difficult it can be to manage a family’s affairs in an emergency. Their father was hospitalized in 2017 after he fell

Incident hitting 700 supermarkets exploited outdated devices exposed to the Internet. Earlier this week, a mass hack of refrigeration systems at an estimated 700 supermarkets throughout France caused them to suddenly malfunction, causing spoilage of untold tons of perishables and, in some cases, fires. As is now the norm, basic cybersecurity would have prevented it. French authorities say the systems, made up of entire fleets of refrigerators and freezers throughout a store, were hacked. More specifically, Internet-connected controllers that allow technicians to remotely administer the store-wide systems were compromised. The unknown attackers responsible then activated defrosters long

Trump White House aides see almost no paths to Republicans keeping control of the House in the midterm elections and are more focused on redoubling their efforts to save the Senate majority. That has been the takeaway for officials in GOP groups who have been discussing the state of play with White House aides in recent weeks, according to three sources familiar with the situation. It all comes as the White House moves into damage-control mode after contemplating for the first time earlier this month, as Inner Loop previously reported , that Republicans could possibly lose both chambers of Congress. The general expectation is that the House has become a lost cause. Races that Republican

Kyiv’s forces experience connectivity problems on Elon Musk’s satellite network. Ukrainian troops have been caught off guard by restrictions on Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite Internet systems that disrupted frontline operations, while Kyiv received no warning from its partners of a Russian missile attack on its energy facilities for the second day running, according to Ukrainian officials. Starlink terminals used by Ukrainian drone units began experiencing signal failures at speeds above 160 km/h, disrupting several missions early on Wednesday morning, according to military personnel and senior Ukrainian officials. “Logistics at the frontline and middle strikes are badly limited,” one
